John 19

19:1 So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.

19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him,

19:3 And said, "Hail, King of the Jews! And they struck him with their hands."

19:4 Then Pilate went out [to address the crowd] again, and said to them, "Behold, I present him to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him."

19:5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"

19:6 Now when the chief priests and [Jewish] officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourself, and you crucify him, for I find no fault in him."

19:7 But the Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."

19:8 When Pilate heard that saying, he was even more afraid,

19:9 And he went back into the judgment hall, and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

19:10 Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to crucify you, as well as the power to release you?"

19:11 But Jesus answered, "You have no power at all against me, unless it has been given to you from above; therefore the one who delivered me to you has the greater sin."

19:12 And from that time Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king, speaks against Caesar."

19:13 Therefore when Pilate heard that saying, he brought Jesus out, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, called Gabbatha.

19:14 And it was the preparation day for the Passover, about the sixth hour; and he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"

19:15 But they cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."

19:16 Then he turned Jesus over to the soldiers to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

19:17 And carrying his cross, he went out to a place called The Place of the Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.

19:18 They crucified him there, along with two others on either side one, and with Jesus in between.1

19:19 Now Pilate had written a sign and put it on the cross. And the sign read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

19:20 This sign was then read by many of the Jews because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.2

19:21 The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, The King of the Jews; instead [write] He said, I am King of the Jews."

19:22 But Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

19:23 Now after the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier; and also his tunic, but the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

19:24 Therefore they said among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but instead cast lots for it, to determine whose it shall be." Thus the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "They parted my garments among them, and cast lots for my clothing." Therefore the soldiers did these things.

19:25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

19:26 When Jesus saw his mother there, along with the disciple whom he loved,3 he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son!"

19:27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, said "I thirst;" to fulfill the prophecy of scripture.

19:29 And sitting nearby, there was a vessel full of vinegar that they soaked a sponge with vinegar, and put it on hyssop branch, and put it to his mouth,4

19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished;" and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

19:31 Now because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was a high one), the Jews requested Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten their death], and then their bodies taken away.

19:32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.

19:33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately came blood and water out.

19:35 And he [John] who witnessed this, provides this account, and his account is true; and he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you might believe.

19:36 For these things were done, fulfilling the prophecy of scripture: "Not one of his bones will be broken."

19:37 And again, another scripture was fulfilled, "They will look on him whom they have pierced."

19:38 Now after this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus in secret for fear of the Jews, requested Pilate that he be allowed to take away the body of Jesus;5 and Pilate gave him permission. Therefore he came and took the body of Jesus.

19:39 Also Nicodemus, who at the first had come to Jesus at night, now came and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.

19:40 And they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the manner of the Jews' burials.

19:41 Now in the place where he had been crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden there was a new tomb, in which a man had yet to have been laid.

19:42 And because it was the Jew's preparation day and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

1 thus the scripture was fulfilled, he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors, Isaiah 53:12.

2 Pilate had written a sign and put it on the cross. And the sign read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.... it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. In George Fox's time, the only colleges were schools of religion; and those who had learned Hebrew, Greek, and Latin were deemed to be "divines." They were thought to be superior in godliness to anyone else because they could read the "original languages." George Fox ridiculed this belief, stating that according to their logic, Pilate was the first "divine" because he had written the sign placed atop Jesus in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. The Holy Spirit can reveal understandings in any language; but Bible Colleges teach from Hebrew, Greek, and Latin Biblical texts, desperately trying to discover the true meaning of the scriptures. If the Holy Spirit was helping in Bible study, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin would not be needed, proving Jesus and the Holy Spirit do not teach you while reading the Bible.

3 the disciple whom Jesus loved, was the author of this book in the Bible, John.

4 thus the scripture was fulfilled, they gave me vinegar to drink, Psa 69:21.

5 thus fulfilling the scripture: He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. Isaiah 53:9. Joseph was a rich man, who requested the body and placed it in a new tomb.
