Titus 1

1:1 Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's elect, and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness,

1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the world began;

1:3 Which in his own time he has revealed through his word by preaching, which is committed to me according to the command of God our Savior.

1:4 To Titus, my own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

1:5 I left you in Crete, so that you would set in order the things that were unfinished, and ordain elders in every city as I had directed you.

1:6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who are not open to accusation of being unruly or disorderly.

1:7 Since he [an elder] is the steward of God, he must be blameless; not self willed, not easily angered, or given to drink, not violent, or greedy for filthy lucre [money];

1:8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

1:9 Holding fast to the faithful word as he has been taught, so that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convince those who contradict it [the faithful word].

1:10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially of the circumcision [Jewish Christians];

1:11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things they ought not to teach, for filthy lucre's sake.

1:12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, "The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies [lazy people serving their stomach]."

1:13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they may come to be be sound in the faith,

1:14 Not paying attention to Jewish fables or the commands of men who turn away from the truth.

1:15 To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

1:16 They profess that they know God; but they deny him by what they do, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
