1 Corinthians 16

Previous Chapter

1 Now concerning the collection1 for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you do also:

2 Upon the first day of the week2 let every one of you set aside something, as God has prospered him, so that no collection will have to be taken when I come. [The first day of the week was when the early churches met, which this verse and others prove. They did not meet on the Sabbath, the seventh day. They met on the Lord's day, the day he was resurrected.]

3 And when I come, I will send whoever you approve with your letters to bring your gift to Jerusalem.

4 And if it is the Lord's will that I go also, they will go with me.

5 Now I will come to you, when I pass through Macedonia, for I must pass through Macedonia.

6 And it may be that I will remain, yes, and winter with you, so that you may send me on my journey wherever I go.

7 For I will not see you now on the way; but I trust to stay awhile with you later, if the Lord permits.

8 But I will stay at Ephesus until Pentecost.

9 For a great door of effectual work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

10 Now if Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without fear, for he works the work of the Lord, as I also do.

11 Therefore let no man despise him; but send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me, for I look for him with the brothers.

12 As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come to you with the brothers; but his will was not at all to come at this time. However, he will come when he has the opportunity.

13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, conduct yourself like men, be strong.

14 Let everything you do, be done with love.

15 Now, brothers, you know the household of Stephanas were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints,

16 I urge you to submit yourselves to such men and to everyone who helps and labors with us.

17 I am glad because of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, for they have supplied what was lacking from you.

18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge those who are such [helpers].

19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you highly in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

20 All the brothers greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

21 Signed in salutation by Paul, in my own hand.

22 If any man does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema [cursed]; Maranatha [come Lord Jesus].

23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

24 My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

1 The false prophets of today point to this scripture to justify their taking up collections in the deficit sects, which they call the offering. Notice, this was a collection for the poor brothers in Jerusalem suffering from the famine, not for Paul, not for the pastors, not for the Apostles, not for a sect building — for poor brothers in Jerusalem. The gospel was particularly well received in Jerusalem by the poor, which resulted in them immediately being cut off from any aid from the Jewish temple, which collected tithes for the relief of widows, orphans, and the poor. Plus, there was a famine in the land. So, the churches there were overwhelmed with those in need. For this reason, collections were made for their relief throughout all of Christ's churches.

2 Mark! In 1 Cor 16:1-2, the collection was taken on the first day of the week, not on the Jewish Sabbath. This proves that early Church did not meet on the Jewish 7th Day Sabbath, but met on the first day of the week. John referred to the Lord's day in Rev 1:10, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day," thought to give importance to the first day by referencing the day of the week that the Lord was resurrected.
