Kings 21

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard to use for an herb garden, because it is near my palace. I will give you a better vineyard for it, or if you prefer, I will give you its worth in money."

But Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you."

Then Ahab came into his house sullen and displeased because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed, turned away his face, and would eat no food.

But Jezebel his wife came to him and said, "Why is your spirit so sullen that you eat no food?"

And he said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard for it.' And he answered, 'I will not give you my vineyard.'"

And Jezebel his wife said to him, "Do you not govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, eat food, and let your heart be cheerful. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."

So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who dwelt with Naboth in his city.

And in the letters she wrote, "Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth prominently among the people.

And seat two worthless men, sons of Belial, opposite him, to bear witness against him, saying, 'You blasphemed God and the king.' Then carry him out and stone him to death."

And the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel directed in the letters that she had sent to them.

They proclaimed a feast and seated Naboth prominently among the people.

And two worthless men came in, children of Belial, and sat opposite him and they witnessed against him in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth blasphemed God and the king." So they carried him out of the city and stoned him to death.

Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."

And when Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, she said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to sell you, for Naboth is not alive, but dead."

And when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite to take possession of it.

Then LORD told Elijah the Tishbite:

"Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to possess it.

And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, Have you murdered and also taken possession?' And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.'"

And Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, O my enemy?" And Elijah answered, "I have found you because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD.

'Behold [says the LORD], I will bring evil upon you and will take away your posterity and will cut off from Ahab all in Israel who piss against the wall [males], both bond and free,

And will make your household like the household of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, and like the household of Baasha, the son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and made Israel sin.'

And also of Jezebel the LORD says, 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.'

Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city, the dogs shall eat; and any who die in the field, the birds of the air shall eat."

For there was never anyone who sold himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD like Ahab did because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.

He did very abominably in following idols, like the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

Now when Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted, and went about mourning.

The LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite:

"See how Ahab humbles himself before me? Because he humbles himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his lifetime, but in his son's day I will bring the evil upon his house."
