|1 Samuel 27 |
And David said in his heart, "one day I will perish by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to quickily escape into the land of the Philistines; and then Saul will give up seeking me any more in the borders of Israel, and so I shall escape out of his hand."
And David arose, and with his six hundred men they crossed over to Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
And David dwelled with Achish at Gath; he and his men, every man with his household, David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's former wife.
When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, Saul no longer again sought him.
And David said to Achish, "If I have now found grace in your eyes, give me a place in some town in the country, so that I may dwell there; for why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?"
Then Achish gave him [the city of Ziklag] that day. Therefore Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah to this day.
David dwelled in the country of the Philistines for a full year and four months.
From there David and his men raided the Geshurites, the Gezrites, and the Amalekites. Those nations were the ancient inhabitants of the land, as far as Shur and even to the land of Egypt.
David assulted the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, taking away the sheep, the oxen, the asses, the camels, and the apparel; and then they returned, stopping to visit Achish.
And Achish said, "Where have you made a raid today?" And David would answer, "Against the south of Judah," or "against the south of the Jerahmeelites", or "against the south of the Kenites." [none of which was true].
David spared neither man nor woman alive, who might bring news to Gath, saying, "Lest they should tell on us, saying, 'David did thus, and he will be doing the same as long as he dwells in the country of the Philistines."
And Achish believed David, saying, "He has made his people Israel to utterly abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant forever."
