1 Timothy 6

Previous Chapter

1 Let those who are bond servants [slaves] esteem their own masters worthy of all honor, so that God's name and doctrine may not be blasphemed.

2 And those who have believing masters, let them not be disrespectful to them because they are brothers, but rather serve them even more because those who benefit from their service are faithful and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

3 If any man teaches otherwise and does not consent to sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine that is according to godliness,

4 He is proud, knowing nothing. He is obsessed about questions and disputes and strife about words, from which comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5 Obstinate disputes of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, supposing that godliness is a source of financial gain;1 from such withdraw yourself.

6 But godliness with contentment is truly great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 If we have food and clothing, let us be content.

9 For those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and utter loss.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil,2 through which some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith,3 lay hold of the eternal life to which you are called and have professed before many witnesses. [Maintain your faith in the promises of God, and His warnings of necessary suffering to be through with sin. Keep waiting on God, listening, and watching. Stay in the cross of obedience. He will not fail you. It is a fight that yields victory.]

13 I charge you in the sight of God who quickens all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed a good confession before Pontius Pilate,

14 That you keep this command without exception, unblamable until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,4

15 Which [appearing] he will bring forth in his own time, who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

16 Who alone has immortality, dwelling in the light that no [unregenerated] man can approach; whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen. [But his regenerated saints dwell as a part of him in that light.]

 17 Charge those who are rich in this world not to be high minded, nor to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

18 [Charge] that they do good, to become rich in good works, to be generous, sharing with others,5 [those in need are the poor, not organized religion]

19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, so that they may lay hold of eternal life.

20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to your trust, avoiding irreverent and vain babble [godless chatter] and the opposing reasonings of what is falsely called knowledge.

21 For some who profess such knowledge have erred from the faith and missed the mark. Grace be with you. Amen. [From the Word of the Lord within: "Christianity has no idea who I am or what I stand for. They are a clueless, fruitless people. They have missed the mark. God is not found going to services or reading about him. They have ignored my commands to turn from sin. They would have no laws. All are filthy dreamers. Everyone is expecting Jesus to be their excuse. All men are without excuse; if I were silent, they would have an excuse. Jesus did not die so you can continue to sin. I would just as soon have avoided that horrible death. I did it to show you the extent of obedience required for your own salvation. If you are still sinning, you belong to sin and not to Me. You must have a devotion to the law that is on every man's heart; you must listen; and you must obey. It is not enough to believe in Jesus; we must believe what He says and then act on it. Restraint of sin is not enough; salvation is being freed from even the desire of your sins. Only a heart that is purged of sin is acceptable to God. Draw near to God; make haste; do not be stymied."]

1 men of corrupt minds, supposing that godliness is a source of financial gain. This is the gospel of prosperity, which is a complete perversion of Christ's message:

Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. Luke 12:15.

What does it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:36.

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,
adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness,
wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile a man. Mark 7:21-23
.

So likewise, whoever does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33.

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed? (For all these things the Gentiles seek after). And your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:31-33.

2 For the love of money is the root of all evil. It it not money that is the root of all evil; it is the love of money. Rich or poor can love money. Rich or poor can have little regard for money. This verse is in the context of beware of the desire to be rich, which results in a fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and utter loss.

From the Word of the Lord within: "defend the rich." Why?—because in today's world, with governments having run up huge debts and looking for revenue instead of cutting spending, politicians are promoting the raise of taxes only on the rich few; which our society has labeled progressive taxation, while labeling taxes that apply to everyone equally as regressive. By that definition, God is regressive because He ordered regressive taxation in the Old Covenant by requiring tithes of 10% of crops from all landowners, regardless of their amount of gain; (tithes were to support the poor and the Levities). We are supposed to treat others as we would have them treat us; we are supposed to treat all men without partiality to avoid sin; and to "stick it to the rich" is clearly a failure to love your neighbor as yourself. Promotion of discriminatory taxation by class of earnings is promoting class envy, and envy is sin.

The rich are, and will increasingly be, the spendthrift politicans' whipping boy: a minority oppressed by envious taxation promoted by politicians trying to raise revenue without being voted out of office by the majority. As Christians, we are supposed to defend the oppressed — even if they are rich, they are still are our neighbor and fellow man.

3 Fight the good fight of faith. Faith must grow. Every revelation you hear or see from God increases you faith. Peter defined the process of faith's growth, where he said: make every effort to add to you faith. 2 Pet 1:5-7. Your faith must stand in your experience of the power of God, not in words spoken by men or reading. The power of God is promised to deliver you [separate you] from your sins, which is salvation. You are saved through faith, and by faith your hearts are purified; but obviously in the beginning of faith, you are not purified, neither are you saved. You must contend for the faith, grow in the faith, build up your faith, increase in faith, perfect what is lacking in your faith, fight the good fight of faith, until victory, when your faith is finished by the finisher; faith is a process and a journey of works of repentance and love, the end of which is to see Christ bring your salvation, to bring your eternal life.

With what are you contending? Your own selfish nature; your lusts and affections; your pride and your pleasures — these are the enemies of your soul — sin. How do you contend against sin? By faith, which is to deny your own will and obey the spoken-to-you commands of God. Such faith will lead to your heart being purified, lead you to the glorious Christian rest and to receive the fruit of the Spirit, which includes a large additional measure of faith.

4 until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. The second appearance of Jesus is a personal experience of the purified believer in all generations, who sees Jesus bring his salvation, dwelling in the light, which no man can approach. The light is so pure, so holy, so intense, that it burns away all evil in its path. So, until you have been changed to become a child of the light, you cannot have "fellowship with the Father or the Son;" but when you are changed, you can share in the inheritance of the saints in the light, being translated into the Kingdom on Christ.

5 Charge the rich to become rich in good works, to be generous, sharing with others [those in need are the poor, not organized religion]. His promise was: IF you seek, as your FIRST priority, the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, all your other needs will be met. We can testify to the truth of his promise, that while seeking the Lord as our first priority in life, He has met all our material needs far in excess of our hopes. Rather than accumulation, your focus should be on giving from your excess; for it is more blessed to give than receive. You must practice generous giving. When you see a need that you can fill from your excess, fill it. Just react to what comes in front of you, or you can give to deserving charities, but not organized religion.

A Warning from the Lord! "You must distribute liberally." [to the poor, not tithing, not sects]
