2 Kings 11

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 Now when Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal descendants.

2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons who were being slain. And she put he and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah so he was not slain.

3 And he remained hidden with his nurse in the temple of the LORD for six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 Then in the seventh year Jehoiada the priest [husband of Jehosheba] sent for the captains over hundreds of the Carites and the guards, and brought them to him into the temple of the LORD. And he made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the temple of the LORD, and showed them the king's son.

5 And he commanded them, saying, "This is the thing that you shall do: A third of you who come on duty on the sabbath shall keep watch over the king's palace,

6 A third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guards. So you shall keep watch over the palace, so that it is not broken into.

7 And the other two companies of you who go off duty on the sabbath shall keep the watch over the temple of the LORD to protect the [little] king.

8 You shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand. And anyone who breaks through the ranks, shall be slain. You are to be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in."

9 So the captains over the hundreds did all the things that Jehoiada the priest commanded; each of them took his men who were to come on duty on the sabbath with those who were going off duty, and came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 And the priest gave the captains over hundreds the spears and shields that belonged to king David, which were in the temple of the LORD.

11 Then the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, all around the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner, by the altar and the temple.

12 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the king's son, and put the crown upon him and gave him the Testimony [the two stone tablets of the law]; and they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands, and shouted, "God save the king."

13 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and the people, she came to the people in the temple of the LORD.

14 And when she looked, there stood the king by the pillar, as was the custom. And the captains and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her robes, and cried out, "Treason, Treason."

15 But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, and said to them, "Take her out between the ranks and kill anyone who follows her with the sword." For the priest had said, "Let her not be slain in the temple of the LORD."

16 So they seized her, and she went through the horses' entrance to the king's palace, and there was she slain.

17  Then Jehoiada then made a covenant between the LORD, the king, and the people that they would be the LORD's people, and also between the king and the people.

18 And all the people of the land went into the temple of Baal and destroyed it. They thoroughly broke in pieces his altars and his images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And Jehoiada the priest appointed officers over the temple of the LORD.

19 Then he took the rulers over hundreds, the captains, the guard, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the temple of the LORD and came by the way of the guard's gate to the king's palace. And Joash sat on the throne of the kings.

20 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after they had slain Athaliah with the sword beside the king's palace.

21 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
