Daniel 9

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;

 2 In the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood from the scriptures the number of years, according to the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet for the fulfilling of the desolation of Jerusalem, were seventy in number.

 3 And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.

 4 And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, "O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to those who love him, and to those who keep his commandments.

 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from your precepts and from your judgments.

 6 Neither have we hearkened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

 7 O LORD, righteousness belongs to you, but to us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.

 8 O Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.

 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivings, although we have rebelled against him;

 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

 11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed your law, even by departing, that they might not obey your voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God because we have sinned against him.

 12 And he has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done to Jerusalem.

 13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil was to come upon us [for disobedience]; yet we did not make our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand your truth.

 14 Therefore has the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he does and because we did not obey his voice.

 15 And now, O Lord our God, who has brought your people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and has gotten you renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

 16 O LORD, according to all your righteousness, I beseech you, let your anger and your fury be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people are become a reproach to all who are about us.

 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of your servant, and his supplications, and cause your face to shine upon your sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.

 18 O my God, incline your ear, and hear; open your eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by your name for we do not present our supplications before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies.

 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for your own sake, O my God for your city and your people are called by your name."

 20 And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

 21 Yes, whiles I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening sacrifice.

 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, "O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill and understanding.

 23 At the beginning of your supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show you for you are greatly beloved. Therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.

 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies.

 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem until the Messiah, the Prince, comes, shall be seven weeks, and sixty two weeks [69 total weeks].1 The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.

 26 And after sixty two weeks the Messiah shall be cut off, but not for himself; and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end of it shall be with a flood, and to the end of the war desolations are determined.

 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for seven; and in the midst of the seven he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. 2 At the edge [of the week] abominations will come by one who destroys, until the decreed end is poured out on the one who destroys.

1 The Jewish prophet, Daniel, prophesied the exact year of the Messiah's coming in the Book of Daniel, detailed below:

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. (Daniel Chapter 9, verse 24)

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks
[69 total weeks]. The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times, [the rebuilders were frequently attacked by their fearful neighboring nations]. (Daniel 9:25)

69 weeks x 7 days/week=483 days.

The Book of Numbers 14:33-34 and the Book of Ezekiel 4:4-6, both show us how a day is a year in Old Testament prophecy:

Numbers: And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection. Num 14:33-34

--------

Ezekiel: Lie also on your left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it. According to the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their iniquity. For I have laid on you the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days; so you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. And when you have completed them, lie again on your right side; then you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days. I have laid on you a day for each year. Eze 4:4-6

By the Lord's explanations above, the 483 days of prophecy is really 483 years. The Messiah was prophesied by Daniel to appear 483 years after the commandment to rebuild Jerusalem.

There are four decrees, all of which took place after the prophecy by Gabriel as reported by Daniel:

  1. The decree from Cyrus in 539 BC to rebuild the temple only. (see Ezra 1:1-3)
  2. The decree from Darius in 521 BC, which reaffirmed Cyrus's decree. (see Ezra 6:1-12)
  3. The decree from Artaxerxes to Ezra in 458 BC to transport the vessels of gold and silver to the temple under construction, and restore the sacrifice. (see Ezra 7:11-26)
  4. The decree from Artaxerxes to Nehemiah in 444 BC to rebuild the wall and gates, which completed the city and made it safe. (see Nehemiah 2:1-8)

Whatever decree is used for the start of the date computation, they all show the Messiah to have long since come and gone. In that time a city was not a city without a wall and gates, so the 444 BC decree to Nehemiah is a strong choice; but either of the decrees from Artaxerxes computes to the life of Jesus, depending on whether you adjust the 360 day Jewish year to the 365.25 day of our calendar, which is computed by 483 x 360/365.25 = 476 years. There is no zero year going from BC to AD, so 458 becomes 457 years and 444 becomes 443 years.

Decree Computation without Adjusting for Solar Years Computation with Adjusting for Solar Year
Artaxerxes 458 BC 483 yrs - 457 yrs=26 AD 476 yrs - 457 yrs=19 AD
Artaxerxes 444 BC 483 yrs - 443 yrs=40 AD 476 yrs - 443 yrs=33 AD

The green dates all match the years when Jesus was alive. Unfortunately scholars have no agreement on the exact years of Christ's life; Wikipedia shows his birth ranging between 7 BC and 2 BC, and death ranging between 25 AD and 36 AD.* But we know the Messiah has come, and is not coming thousands of years later; and Jesus is obviously the only historical figure that could have possibly fulfilled the prophecy.

*There is a very convincing analysis of the exact date of the crucifixion of Jesus, which joins scripture's account of the eclipse of the sun to the historical dates of the lunar eclipse: "There was only one lunar eclipse visible from Jerusalem at the time of passover in the period from 26 - 36 AD. It occurred on Friday April 3, AD 33. The Moon rose above the horizon already in the midst of eclipse and would have progressively 'turned to blood' as the eclipse continued."

Jesus was not recognized for many reasons, chief of which was that the Jews were looking for the reestablishment of a physical kingdom and the defeat of their physical enemies in the world, such as the Romans. But the Kingdom that Jesus established was an everlasting spiritual kingdom, the Kingdom of Heaven — which in within us and surrounds us — a different and higher dimension; and instead of physical enemies being defeated, Jesus brought Israel and the whole world the formula for defeating our spiritual enemies: lust, pride, lying, anger, envy, jealousy, covetousness, greed, fear, depression, etc. — accomplished through repentance on the inward cross of self-denial. The Jews had the scriptures and missed him; but those who had been taught by the Word of God that is in their hearts and mouths, recognized Jesus — and entered the Kingdom of Heaven, while still on the earth — to become priests and kings, having defeated their spiritual enemies (lust, pride, anger, envy, etc.) to forever serve God without fear in his presence, continually beholding his glory and power. Just as the Jews with the scriptures missed Jesus, so has most of Christendom missed the spiritual Jesus, who is in every man who comes into the world, waiting to be sought, listened to, heard, and obeyed.

To still be waiting on the Messiah, is to label Daniel a false prophet — who obviously was a true prophet, even recognized by the heathen king Nebuchadnezzar to be a prophet of the most high God.

2 He shall confirm the new covenant with many for seven. Most translations say week instead of seven; the Net Bible Hebrew of this verse shows ewbsh <07620>, which translates to seven, period of seven (days or years). The Word of the Lord within has stated that "Little children, this is the seventh day of the kingdom; we are at the beginning of time," which kingdom confirmed the new covenant. If there are many years yet to go before the end of the kingdom age, why would He tell us that we are in the last period and that we are at the beginning of a new time?

There are six scriptural attestations that shows Christ returning with the Kingdom, coming to those who were alive 2000 years ago. When would be the end of the new covenant? Assuming each day or period of years is equal in time in a measure of years; knowing that six of those periods of years have already passed; and knowing that the kingdom age started in approximately 33 AD*; then the table below shows possible end years:

*There is a very convincing analysis of the exact date of the crucifixion of Jesus, which joins scripture's account of the eclipse of the sun to the historical dates of the lunar eclipse: "There was only one lunar eclipse visible from Jerusalem at the time of passover in the period from 26 - 36 AD. So, it would appear the end of the kingdom age and the end of the New Covenant is any time between 2021 and 2339. Based on the messages received from the Word of the Lord within, that time appears to be sooner than later. Some of the messages from the Word of the Lord within are:

In addition to the above, I have received many messages regarding what I will be doing before the end, during the troubles of the end, and after the end of the kingdom age when the earth has been purged of all sin and sinners. Since I am 74 years of age, (as of 2016), that time is very unlikely to be long in coming. My guess would be around 2021-2028.

The Word of the Lord within has also recently, (4/2013), said:

So don't worry about there being enough time for you to attain salvation. Before the end of the Kingdom Age and the New Covenant, there will be a glorious break-out of the true church from the wilderness with great power; and salvation will be faster for all, once that occurs.
