Ecclesiastes 9

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; no man knows either love or hatred by anything that is before them.

2 All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked;1 to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices, and to him that does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; and he that swears, as he that fears an oath.

3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead do not know anything; neither have they any longer a reward because the memory of them is forgotten.

6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, perishes; neither do they have any longer a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.

7 Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God now accepts your works.

8 Let your garments be always white, and let your head lack no ointment [joy].

9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of the life of your vanity, which he has given you under the sun, all the days of your vanity; for that is your portion in this life, and in your labor which you take under the sun.

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go.

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happens to them all.2

12 For man also knows not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.

13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great to me:

14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it.

15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

16 Then said I, "Wisdom is better than strength;" even though the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him who rules among fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

1 All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; Before Christ, all men died and went to the place of the dead, waiting. Hebrews tells us that the mighty men of God in the Old Testament could not enter heaven until after Christ's disciples and followers had been made perfect; and when they entered the Kingdom of Heaven, then the prophets of Old could too. The Apostle, writing in Hebrews of the prophets of old said:

They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, and tormented,
(Of whom the world was not worthy). They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
And all these all, having obtained God's approval through faith, did not receive the promise,
God having planned something better for us, that without us they would not be made perfect.
Heb 37:40

And so, the righteous and the sinners of the Old Testament had a common fate, at least for awhile: death. Now there are radical, fantastic differences between the death of the righteous and the death of sinners.

For after Jesus came to open up the Kingdom of Heaven to men, there was then and now a death that was different: a death of the selfish spirit of man on the inward cross of self-denial, at which death He said that the Father and himself would come and make their home [dwell and live] in those who loved and obeyed him. (23) I will dwell in them, And walk in them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people. 2 Cor 6:16 and That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith..that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Eph 3:17-19 and Until we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Eph 4:13.

Jesus has promised how his disciples, (and we who believe the promises), would become one with Jesus and one with God. Jesus has described being translated into the Kingdom of heaven within them and around them. These promises are the true hope, of the true believers. With this true hope, their obedient faith can purify their hearts and souls, so they can be presented perfect as acceptable company for fellowship with the Father and Son. For without purity, fellowship is impossible: For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 2 Cor 6:14.

That they all may be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17:21. I in them, and you in me, that they may be made perfect in one, John 17:23.

These promises are beyond the ability of most men to hear, understand, and believe; yet here, they are clearly requested by Jesus, and we know that all of Jesus's prayers have undoubtedly been granted. This is the good news that Jesus came to preach — the availability of restoration of man to the image of God, lost in the garden; but even beyond that — to union with God, translated into the Kingdom of heaven within them and around them, while still alive on earth. That they also, may be with me where I am. John 17:24. This is for his disciples to be with him, in his company, in the Kingdom of Heaven. This is to be translated into the Kingdom of heaven because God has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son; to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Col 1:12-13, in which light we have fellowship with other saints, and with the Father and Son. 1 John 1:3.

the love, with which you have loved me, may be in them, and I in them. John 17:26. The same love which the Father bestowed on Jesus, is given to his true followers, and Jesus is also to be in them. God is love. We know that he has given an infinite amount of love to Jesus; now Jesus has asked the Father to do the same to his true followers. The following are the proofs of being a true follower of Jesus:

And Paul told us that love was the greatest gift of all.

Here are the promises of union with Christ and the Father, union with all other disciples, and to be in heaven while still alive — to have a fellowship in the Spirit with the Father, the Son, and other saints made perfect in the past. Once you grasp the true promises, the true hope, the true gospel — then all the scriptures will begin to make sense, without having to discard the exclusions or the requirements of cleansing, purity, perfection, and holiness.

2 but time and chance happens to them all, Not so! at least not since Jesus came and opened up the Kingdom of Heaven; not since Jesus came and gave everyone the opportunity to obtain the unimaginable favor of God, just by believing in his name and making a sincere effort to repent from all the evil you understand as you seek God's counsel and changing grace.
