Exodus 28

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 "Now take Aaron your brother from among the children of Israel, along with his sons Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so that they may minister to me in the priest's office.

 And you shall make sacred garments for Aaron your brother for honor and for beauty.

 Speak to all who are skillful men, whom I have filled with wisdom in such things, that they shall make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister to me in the priest's office.

 These are the garments they shall make: a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered tunic, a turban, and a waistband or sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons, that they may minister to me in the priest's office.

 They shall receive gold, blue, purple, scarlet cloth, and fine linen from the people.

 And they shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen, with skillful work.

 It shall have its two shoulder straps joined at the two edges, so it can be fastened together.

 And the skillfully woven waistband which is on the ephod, shall be made of the same, of gold, blue, purple, scarlet cloth, and fine twined linen.

 You shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the twelve children of Israel;

 Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names on the other stone, in order of their birth.

  You shall engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel like a jeweler engraves a signet. Then you shall set them in settings of gold.

 And you shall put the two stones upon the shoulder straps of the ephod as stones of memorial to the children of Israel; Aaron shall bear their names upon his two shoulders before the LORD as a memorial.

 You shall also make settings of gold filigree,

 And you shall make two chains of pure gold of braided work, like a rope, and fasten the braided chains to the settings.

 You shall make a breastplate of judgment with skilled work; you shall make it like the work of the ephod: of gold, blue, purple, scarlet cloth, and fine twined linen.

 It shall be square and doubled over; a span [9 inches] long and a span wide.

 You shall set in it settings four rows of stones: a ruby, a topaz, and a carbuncle shall be the first row;

 The second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond;

 The third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;

 And the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they shall be set in gold filigree.

 Each stones shall be engraved with the names of the children of Israel, like the engravings of a signet; each one with its own name according to the twelve tribes.

 You shall make chains of braided cords of pure gold for the breastplate.

 And you shall make two rings of gold on the breastplate and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.

 And you shall put the two braided chains of gold in the two rings that are on the ends of the breastplate.

 The other two ends of the two braided chains you shall fasten in the two settings, and put them on the shoulder straps of the ephod.

 You shall make two rings of gold and put them on the two ends of the breastplate on its border, which is on the inside edge next to the ephod.

 And you shall make two other rings of gold and put them on the two shoulder straps of the ephod underneath, toward the front, close to the other coupling, above the curious waistband of the ephod.

 And they shall bind the breastplate by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be above the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod, so that the breastplate will not come loosed from the ephod.

 So Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart when he goes into the holy place, as a memorial before the LORD continually.

 In the breastplate of judgment you shall put the Urim and the Thummim; they shall be upon Aaron's heart when he goes in before the LORD, and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.

 Make the robe of the ephod all of blue.

 There shall be an head opening in the center of the top, it shall have a binding of woven work around the opening, like the opening of a garment, so that it will not tear.

 And you shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, around its hem, with bells of gold between them;

 A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, around the hem of the robe.

 It shall be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound shall be heard when he goes in to the Holy of Holies before the LORD and when he comes out, lest he die there.

 You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave upon it, like the engravings of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

 And you shall put it on a blue cord, so that it may be fastened to the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban.

 It shall be upon Aaron's forehead, so that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall consecrate in all their holy gifts; and it shall always be upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.

 You shall skillfully weave the tunics of fine linen and make the turban of fine linen, and you shall make the sash of embroidered needlework.

 And you shall make tunics and sashes and caps for Aaron's sons, for honor and for beauty.

 And you shall put them on Aaron your brother and his sons with him, and shall anoint them and consecrate them, and sanctify them so that they may minister to me in the priest's office.

 You shall make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness, they shall reach from the loins to the thighs.

 They shall be on Aaron and his sons when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation or when they come near to the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they do not bring iniquity on themselves and die; it shall be a statute forever to Aaron and his descendants after him.
