Exodus 40

Previous Chapter

 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

 "On the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

 And you shall put in it the ark of the Testimony and screen the ark with the veil.

 You shall bring in the table and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and you shall bring in the lamp stand and light its lamps.

 You shall set the altar of gold for the incense in front of the ark of the Testimony and put the hanging at the door to the tabernacle.

 You shall set the altar of the burnt offering in front of the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.

 And you shall set the basin between the tent of the congregation and the altar and put water in it.

 And you shall set up the court [courtyard] all around and hang up the hanging at the court gate.

 Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it and all its vessels, and it shall be holy.

 You shall anoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its utensils; and sanctify the altar, and it shall be an altar most holy.

 And you shall anoint the basin and its base and sanctify it.

 Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and wash them with water.

 And you shall put the holy garments on Aaron, and anoint him and sanctify him, that he may minister to me in the priest's office.

 And you shall bring his sons and clothe them with tunics,

 And you shall anoint them as you anointed their father, that they may minister to me in the priest's office; for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood to them throughout their generations."

 Thus Moses did; according to all that the LORD commanded him, so he did.

 And it came to pass on the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was erected.

  Moses set up the tabernacle, fastened its bases, set up its boards, put in its crossbars, and erected its pillars.

 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as the LORD commanded him.

 He took the Testimony [the Ten Commandments] and put it into the ark, and attached the poles to the ark, and put the mercy seat on top of the ark.

 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle and set up the veil of the screen and covered the ark of the Testimony, as the LORD commanded him.

 He put the table in the tent of the congregation on the north side of the tabernacle outside the veil;

 And he set the bread in order on it before the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.

 He put the lamp stand in the tent of the congregation opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle.

 And he lighted the lamps before the LORD, as the LORD commanded him.

 He put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the veil;

 And he burned sweet incense on it, as the LORD commanded him.

 Then he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle.

 And he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation and offered upon it the burnt offering and the grain offering, as the LORD commanded him.

 He set the basin between the tent of the congregation and the altar and put water there for washing.

 And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet there.

 When they went into the tent of the congregation or when they came near the altar, they washed, as the LORD commanded Moses.

 He erected the court all around the tabernacle and the altar and set up the hanging at the court gate. So Moses finished the work.

 Then the cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of the congregation because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

  In all their journeys, when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward;

 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey on until the day that it was taken up.

 For throughout all their journeys the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.
