Ezekiel 40

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, at the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was captured, on that very same day the hand of the LORD was upon me and brought me there.

In the visions of God he brought me into the land of Israel and set me upon a very high mountain, on the south of which was a structure like a city.

He brought me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze, and he stood in the gateway with a line of flax and a measuring rod in his hand.

And the man said to me, "Son of man, look with your eyes and hear with your ears and set your heart upon all that I show you, for you have been brought here so that I might show them to you. Declare all that you see to the house of Israel."

And behold there was a wall around the outside of the temple, and in the man's hand there was a measuring rod of six long, each was a cubit (18 inches) and handbreadth (6 inches); so he measured the width of the wall, which was one rod (12 feet); and the height, which was one rod (12 feet).

Then he came to the gate which looks toward the east and went up its stairs and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one rod broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one rod broad.

And the chambers for the guards were one rod long and one rod broad; and the space between the guard chambers was five cubits; and the threshold of the gate by the porch of the gate was one rod inside.

He also measured the inside of porch of the gate, one rod.

Then he measured the porch of the gate, eight cubits; and its posts, two cubits; and the porch of the gate faced to the inside.

And the guard chambers of the gate eastward were three on one side, and three on the other side; the three were the same size, and the posts were the same size on both sides.

And he measured the width of the entry of the gate, ten cubits; and the length of the gate, thirteen cubits.

The space before the guard chambers was also one cubit on each side; and the guard chambers were six cubits on each side.

then he measured the gate from the roof of one guard chamber to the roof of another, the width was five and twenty cubits from door to door.

He also measured the gateposts of threescore cubits, and the court around the gatepost went to the gatepost.

And from the face of the gate at the entrance to the face of the porch of the inner gate was fifty cubits.

And there were narrow windows to the guard chambers and to their posts around the gate, and likewise to the arches; and windows were all around inside, and upon each post were palm trees.

Then he brought me into the outward court, and behold there was a pavement and thirty chambers chambers all around the court.

And the pavement by the side of the gates over against the length of the gates was the lower pavement.

Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the front of the inner court without, a hundred cubits eastward and northward.

And he measured the length and width of the gate of the outward court that looked toward the north.

And its guard chambers, three on each side, and its posts and arches were the same measure as the first gate; the length was fifty cubits, and the width twenty-five cubits.

And their windows and their arches and their palm trees were the same measure as the gate that looks toward the east; and they went up to it by seven steps, and its arches were in front.

And the gate of the inner court was opposite the gate that faced toward the north and east, and he measured from gate to gate a hundred cubits.

After that he brought me toward the south, and behold there was a gate toward the south, and he measured its posts and arches and they were like those other measures.

And there were windows around it and its arches, like those other windows; the length was fifty cubits and the width twenty-five cubits.

There were seven steps to go up to it, and its arches were in front. And it had palm trees, one on each side upon its posts.

And there was a gate in the inner court toward the south, and he measured from gate to gate toward the south a hundred cubits.

And he brought me to the inner court by the south gate, and he measured the south gate and it was like those other measures.

And its guard chambers and its posts and arches were like those other measures, and there were windows in it and its arches, it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

The arches around it were twenty-five cubits long and five cubits broad.

Its arches were toward the outer court; and palm trees were upon its posts, and it had eight steps going up to it.

And he brought me into the inner court toward the east and he measured the gate; and it was like those other measures.

And its guard chambers and posts and arches were like those other measures, and there were windows in it and around its arches; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

And its arches faced toward the outer court; and palm trees were upon its posts on each side, and it had eight steps going up to it.

 And he brought me to the north gate and measured it, and it was like those other measures;

The guard chambers, posts and arches, and the windows around it were the same as the others. The length was fifty cubits, and the width twenty-five cubits.

And its posts were toward the outer court; and palm trees were upon its posts on each side, and it had eight steps going up to it.

There was a chamber and its door was by the posts of the gates where they washed the burnt offering.

And in the porch of the gate were two tables on each side, on which to slay the burnt offering and the sin offering and the trespass offering.

And at the outer side, as one goes up to the entry of the north gate, were two tables; and at the other side, which was at the porch of the gate, were two tables.

Four tables were on the inside and four tables were on the outside of the side of the gate, eight tables upon which they would slay their sacrifices.

And the four tables were of hewn stone for the burnt offering, a cubit and an half long, and a cubit and an half broad, and one cubit high. Upon these they laid the instruments with which they would slay the burnt offering and the sacrifice.

And inside were hooks, a handbreadth long fastened around the room. And upon the tables was the flesh of the offering.

Outside the inner gate were the chambers of the singers in the inner court, one was at the side of the north gate facing toward the south, and one at the side of the east gate facing toward the north.

And he said to me, "This chamber which faces toward the south is for the priests, the keepers who have charge of the Temple,

And the chamber which faces toward the north is for the priests, the keepers who have charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, who are the only ones among the sons of Levi who come near the LORD to minister to him."

So he measured the court, a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar that was in front of the Temple.

And he brought me to the porch of the temple, and measured each post of the porch, five cubits on each side. And the width of the gate was three cubits on each side.

The length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the width eleven cubits; and he brought me by the steps by which it was reached, and there were pillars on the posts, one on each side.
