Genesis 1:2

Display Chapter and Footnotes

2 And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. [The waters spoken of here are not waters as we know them for the earth had not been formed yet; the waters here are not defined, other than to be building blocks of the creation. Darkness in this verse is spiritual darkness. This pool of building blocks was without the light of God, without order, without purpose, without direction. When Satan and his angels rebelled, they were banished to the darkness in the kingdom of hell. When a man is banished from heaven, he is sent to outer darkness. From the Word of the Lord within: "Nothing is known about the past because nothing is known in human terms." Our knowledge is limited by human vocabularies that stem from human experience in this world, and that is insufficient to really know anything.]
