|Hosea 10 |
Israel is an abundant vine that brings forth its fruit. According to the multitude of his fruit he has increased the [idol] altars; according to the goodness of his land he has made more sacred pillars.
Their heart is divided; now they are found guilty. The Lord will break down their altars, he will destroy their images.
For now they say, "We have no king because we do not fear the LORD; what then can a king do for us?"
They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant; thus judgment springs up like poisonous hemlocks in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria fear because of the calf idol of Bethaven, for its people and its priests who rejoiced over it for its glory shall mourn over it, because it has departed from them.
The calf idol shall be carried to Assyria for a present to king Jareb; Ephraim shall be disgraced and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
As for Samaria, her king is cut off like the foam upon the water.
The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed; the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, "Hide us!" and to the hills, "Fall around us!"
"O Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah; there they stood so that the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.
When I desire, I will chastise them, and the people shall be gathered against them when I bind them for their two transgressions.
Ephraim is like a heifer that is trained and loves to tread out the grain, but I will put a yoke over her fair neck. I will now make Ephraim to pull [a plow]; Judah shall plow and Jacob shall break his clods.
Sow righteousness for yourselves; reap in mercy. Break up your unplowed ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and rains righteousness upon you.
You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped iniquity, you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you trusted in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men,
Therefore shall a tumult arise against your people and all your fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel on the day of battle; the mother was dashed in pieces with her children.
So shall this be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness; in a morning the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off."
