Isaiah 13

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 This is the prophecy of the burden of Babylon to be relieved, which Isaiah, the son of Amoz saw:

2 "Lift up a signal banner upon the high mountain, shout to them, motion with your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.

3 I have commanded my sanctified ones; to satisfy my anger I have also called my mighty ones, who rejoice in my greatness.

4 There is the noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together as the LORD of hosts assembles his host for the battle.

5 They come from a far country, from the far reaches of heaven, including the LORD with the weapons of his indignation to destroy the whole land.

6 Wail for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as destruction from the Almighty.1

7 Therefore everyone's hands will be weak, and every man's heart will melt.

8 And they shall be afraid. Pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them. They shall be in pain as a woman who gives birth. They shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be red [from embarrassment and fear].

9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners out of the land.2

10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations will not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; a man even [more precious] than the gold of Ophir.

13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall be removed out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

14 And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man takes up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee everyone into his own land.

15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and everyone that is joined to them shall fall by the sword.

16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.

17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare children.

19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellence, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelled in from generation to generation; neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.

21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

22 And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces; and her time has nearly come, and her days shall not be prolonged."

1 The Day of the Lord against Babylon is not the physical Babylon; instead it is the pride and self-righteousness of man in general, and in particular as it is expressed in the false religions of the world. When comparing the description of the events, they parallel what is described in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, where Jesus is recorded saying all the end times prophesies would be fulfilled before the generation of 2000 years ago died, (click here to see all). Since we know that no one who lived 2000 years ago, could possibly still be alive, we understand that it is a personal experience for all men.
See Francis Howgill's excellent writing for the details of the Day of the Lord.
The Day of the Lord and the Second Appearance of Jesus are the same. Jesus told us more of his appearance: For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (Not just a particular generation.)
Some standing here shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. Mat 16:27-8,Mar 8:38,9:1,Luk 9:26-27

Those not purified, to see Jesus' coming in them before death, see him as they die, as all peoples, all nations, all generations do.
Behold, he comes with clouds; and every eye will see him, and also those who pierced him; (also, the Jews 2000 years ago)
and all the peoples of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Rev 1:7.
2000 years ago, to the Jewish High Priest and the Pharisees at his trial, Jesus said..
you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.  Mark 14:62

This is not a particular generation in our time or later. (See Howgill for more on those not purified).
Heaven appears to our spiritual eye as in a mist or in clouds — so, his coming is on the clouds of heaven, within the hearts of purified believers.
We also have the record of Daniel seeing the Son of Man coming on the clouds in great glory: I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven.
He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Heb 9:28.
Notice he appears to bring salvation. But he doesn't bring salvation to the whole world — only to those waiting for him.
Neither is his appearance to the whole world, only to those who are waiting for him, and who love him by obeying him.
Salvation occurs when He appears within to bring salvation to those who have waited..listened..heard, and obeyed him — those who love him, and who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pet 1:5

2 He shall destroy the sinners out of the land; and This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations, Isa 14:26. Listen! This is coming, and soon; just as described in Revelation. From the Word of the Lord within:"I will make obedience the fruit of righteousness. The Lord shall establish righteousness throughout the earth. It will be done." To establish righteousness throughout the earth, evil will have to be destroyed.
