|Jeremiah 37 |
And king Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, reigned instead of Coniah, the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.
But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, heeded the words of the LORD, which he spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal, the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah, the son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Pray now to the LORD our God for us."
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people because they had not put him from prison.
Then Pharaoh's army came forth out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who besieged Jerusalem heard the news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
Then the word of the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah saying,
"Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me; 'Behold, Pharaoh's army, which has come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.
And the Chaldeans shall come again to fight against this city, take it, and burn it with fire.
Thus says the Lord: Do not deceive yourselves, saying, 'The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us, for they shall not depart.'
For even if you had stricken down the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, yet would they rise up, every man from his tent, and burn this city with fire."
And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans had retreated from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,
That Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to settle on his property there among the people.
And when he went to the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are running away to the Chaldeans."
Then said Jeremiah, "That is not true; I do not run away to the Chaldeans." But Irijah would not listen to him, so he took Jeremiah to the princes.
Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah; they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan, the scribe, which they had made the prison.
After Jeremiah had been imprisoned in the cells of the dungeon for many days,
Then Zedekiah the king sent for him and had him taken out of prison; and the king asked him secretly to come to his house, and said, "Is there any word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is; for he said, 'you shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.'"
Moreover Jeremiah said to king Zedekiah, "How have I offended you, or your servants, or this people, that you have put me in prison?
Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?'
Therefore hear now, I pray you, O my lord the king; let my supplication, I pray you, be accepted before you; that you cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there."
Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should daily give him a piece of bread out of the bakers' street until all the bread in the city is spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
