Job 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 "If we decide to speak with you, will you be grieved? Yet who can restrain himself from speaking?

3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.

4 Your words have upheld him who was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

5 But now it has come upon you, and you have fainted; it touches you, and you are troubled.

6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and is not your hope the uprightness of your ways?

7 Remember, I pray you, who has ever perished, being innocent? Or where have the righteous been cut off?

8 Even as I have seen, those who plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

9 By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils they are consumed.

10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

12 Now a thing was privately brought to me, and my ear heard a little of it.

13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,

14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.

16 It stood still, but I could not discern its form. An image was before my eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

17 'Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his maker?

18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and he charged his angels with folly.

19 How much less in those who dwell in houses [bodies made from clay are the houses of the spirit] of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth?

20 They are destroyed from morning to evening. They perish forever without any regarding it.

21 Does not their excellence that is in them go away? They die, even without wisdom.'"1

1 This was an evil spirit that spoke these words to Eliphaz the Temanite, deliberately so that he would relay them to Job and thus discourage him, and cause him to curse God.

Yet these words are used by the preachers today in an attempt to prove that man cannot be perfect; the preachers quote a demon to prove their heresies. This whole book is about a man whom God has called perfect twice. The purpose of the ministers, (if specifically trained and appointed by Holy Spirit), is for the perfection of the saints, Eph 4:11-13 - nothing else — for the perfection of the saints. As Paul said: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom, so that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Col 1:28
