Joshua 2

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

And Joshua, the son of Nun, sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, "Go view the land and Jericho." And they went, and came into a house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged.

And the king of Jericho was told, "Behold, men from the children of Israel came in here tonight to search out the country."

And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you and have entered into your house for they have come to search out all the country."

But the woman took the two men, hid them, and replied, "Men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from.

And about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, the men left; where the men went, I am not aware. Pursue after them quickly so you may overtake them."

But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and had hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

So the [king's] men sought after them as far as the fords of the Jordan. As soon as those who pursued them had gone out of the city, the gate was shut.

Before the men laid down on the roof, she came up to them,

And said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you this land, that your terror has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither was there remaining any more courage in any man because of you; for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have shown you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a sure sign.

And that you will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death."

And the men answered her, "In return for saving our life, yours will be spared if you do not inform about our business. And it shall be, when the LORD has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you."

Now since her house was built on the wall and she dwelled there, she let them down [outside the wall] from a window by a rope.

And she said to them, "Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers have returned; and afterward may you go your way."

And the men said to her, "We will be blameless of this oath that you have made us swear.

Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window where you lowered us down; and you shall bring your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father's household home to you.

And it shall be, that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be upon his own head, and we will be guiltless; and whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is laid upon him.

And if you speak of our business, then we will be released from this oath that you have made us swear."

And she said, "According to your words, so be it." And she sent them away, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

They left and came to the mountain where they stayed for three days, until the pursuers had returned; the pursuers had sought them throughout all the way but did not find them.

So the two men descended from the mountain to return, and passed over the Jordan to come to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all the things that had befallen them.

And they said to Joshua, "Truly the LORD has delivered all the land into our hands because all the inhabitants of the country are faint in heart because of us."
