Judges 5

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Then Deborah and Barak, the son of Abinoam, sang on that day, saying,

"When the leaders take the lead in Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves — praise the LORD!

Hear, O you kings; give ear, O you princes; I, even I, will sing to the LORD. I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.

LORD, when you went out of Seir, when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens dropped, yes, the clouds also poured down water.

The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, even Sinai at the presence of the LORD God of Israel.

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied and the travelers walked on byways.

The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, I arose a mother in Israel.

They chose new gods; then war was in the gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

My heart is with the rulers of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the LORD!

Speak of it, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets, and walk by the way.

Far from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel. Then the people of the LORD shall go down to the city gates.

'Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, utter a song! Arise, Barak, and lead your captives, you son of Abinoam.'

Then the remnant of the nobles marched down, the people the LORD came down to me against the mighty.

Out of Ephraim came down those whose root is in Amalek, after you, Benjamin, with your people. Out of Machir came down commanders, and out of Zebulun those who handle the staff of the recruiter and commander.

The princes of Issachar were with Deborah, and Issachar was also with Barak; rushing into the valley at his heels. But among the divisions of Reuben there was much searching of heart.

Why did you stay among the sheepfolds, to hear the pipings for the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there was much searching of heart.

Gilead remained beyond the Jordan, and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and stayed in his inlets.

But Zebulun and Naphtali were a people who risked their lives to the death in the high places of the field.

The kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan in Taanach fought by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of money.

The stars fought from heaven, the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.

The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, you have trodden down with strength.

Then the horses hoofs pounded loudly from the galloping, the galloping of their mighty ones.

'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of the LORD. 'Curse its inhabitants bitterly, because they did not come to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.'

Blessed above women shall be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

Sisera asked for water, and she gave him milk; she brought out curds in a lordly dish.

She put her hand to the tent peg, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer. And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote his head, when she pierced and struck through his temple.

At her feet he sank, he fell, he lay still. At her feet he sank, he fell; where he sank, there he fell down dead.

The mother of Sisera looked out a window and cried through the lattice, 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?'

Her wise ladies answered her; and she said to herself as well,

'Are they not finding and dividing the plunder? To every man a maiden or two, to Sisera a plunder of garments of many colors, a spoil of many colors of needlework, of many colors of needlework embroidered on both sides for my neck?'

So let all your enemies perish, O LORD! But let those who love you be like the sun when it rises in its might." And the land had rest forty years.
