Nehemiah 7

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 Now it came to pass that when the wall had been built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites had been appointed,

2 That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem for he was a faithful man and feared God more than most.

3 And I said to them, "Do not let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot, and while the watchmen stand by, let the gatekeepers shut the doors and bar them; and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his station on the wall, and everyone to be on the wall opposite his house.

4 Now the city was large and great, but the people were few in it, and the houses had not been built.

5 My God had put into my heart to gather together the nobles, the rulers, and the people so that they might be counted by their families. I found a register of the genealogy of them who came up at the first from Babylon, and found written in it,
