Psalms 101

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 I will sing of mercy and judgment; to you, O LORD, I will sing.

2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.1

3 I will set no wicked thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

4 A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know a wicked person.

5 I will cut off whomever privately slanders his neighbor; I will not allow him who has a high look and a proud heart.

6 My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in a perfect way shall serve me.

7 He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house; he who tells lies shall not be at ease in my sight.

8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land, so that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

1 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way... I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. We know David, the likely writer of this Psalm, was perfect: For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart away after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. 1 Kings 11:4. We know that David fell from perfection to adultery and murder. Then David was severely punished by the Lord, but to a purpose: to bring him back to perfection, to which he was restored. Before Christ, a man could only reach a state of perfection from which he could still fall to temptation and lose closeness with God. But after Christ, he made perfection of a man to be permanent and everlasting: For by one offering he has forever totally cleansed and perfected those who are sanctified and made holy. Heb 10:14.
