Psalms 118

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 O give thanks to the LORD; he is good because his mercy endures forever.

2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endures forever.

3 Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endures forever.

4 Let them now who fear the LORD say, that his mercy endures forever.

5 I called upon the LORD in distress; the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.

6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear for what can man do to me?

7 The LORD takes my part with those who help me, therefore I shall see my desire upon those who hate me.

8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations compassed me about, but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

11 They compassed me about; yes, they compassed me about, but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

12 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched like the fire of thorns; for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

13 You have thrust hard at me that I might fall, but the LORD helped me.1

14 The LORD is my strength and song, and has become my salvation.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous; the right hand of the LORD does valiantly.

16 The right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD does valiantly.

17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

18 The LORD has chastened me sorely, but he has not given me over to death.

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:

20 This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.

21 I will praise you for you have heard me, and have become my salvation.

22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.2

23 This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 This is the day which the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save now, I beseech you, O LORD; O LORD, I beseech you, now give us success.

26 Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD; we have blessed you from of the house of the LORD.

27  God is the LORD, who has shown us light;3 bind the sacrifice with cords, even to the horns of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, I will exalt you.

29 O give thanks to the LORD for he is good and his mercy endures forever.

1 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched like the fire of thorns; for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. The demons swarm around a man like a bees. David, who has always had his way as king, imagines he will destroy the demons too; but that is not how the Lord works. The demons are there under his instructions; just like Paul told the Corinthians to turn the man over to Satan, so his Spirit could still be saved. God uses the demons to bring his sons to perfection. David said: You have thrust hard at me that I might fall, but the LORD helped me. They inflict great suffering. They send their darts into our flesh, which feel like bee stings or fiery thorns: above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Eph 6:16. They came around me daily like water; they compassed me about together. Psa 88:17. The cords of death surrounded me, and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The cords of hell surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. Psa 18:4-5.

2 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Jesus Christ was rejected by the supposed builders (the Jews) of the temple of God; and he became the chief cornerstone of the temple in New Jerusalem, the disciples the pillars, and the spiritual Jews with a circumcised heart, (both male and female, both Jew and Gentile), the congregation of the inner court. This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

3 God is the Lord, who has show us light. Light is a gift of God, which is received by being obedient to the commands heard: And we have the prophetic word [what you hear] firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through and the Morning Star rises (comes into being) in your hearts. 2 Peter 1:19. I, Jesus.. am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star. Rev 22:16.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Mat 5:8. Without a pure heart, you are now, and will be, banned from heaven.
He appears to the purified heart of a believer — he is seen. This is his second appearance - this time to the purified in heart.
For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness,"made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge
of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 2 Cor 4:6.
Christ is revealed in your heart; you see, and have knowledge of, the glory of God.
