Psalms 142

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 I cried to the LORD with my voice; with my voice to the LORD I made my supplication.

2 I poured out my complaint before him; I showed my trouble before him.

3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then you knew my path. In the way in which I walked, have they privately laid a snare for me.

4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me; refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

5 I cried to you, O LORD: I said, "You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

6 Attend to my cry for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors for they are stronger than I.

7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise your name;1 the righteous shall yet surround me for you shall deal bountifully with me."

1 deliver me from my persecutors for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise your name; David was one of the strongest men in battle ever recorded; he is not speaking of natural persecutors that are stronger than him. He is speaking of fallen angels, demons, who surround him in the parallel dimension and who inflict injury on him. Who afflict him, who accuse him, who ridicule him, who curse God, who have imprisoned him. But he knows God is good and merciful; he knows it will all be over some day; he knows the Lord will reinstate him to his favor; he knows that the righteous shall yet surround him for God shall deal bountifully with him.
