|Psalms 18 |
[David spoke to the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul. This is identical to 2 Sam 22. 1 In his old age David was fighting a Philistine giant and lost his strength. He was almost killed and only saved by Abishai, the son of Zeruiah and brother to Joab, (both nephews of David), who came to aid David, striking the Philistine giant down and killing him. 2 Sam 21:15-17. That was David's last battle because the men of his army swore to him, saying, "You shall go no longer out with us to battle, so that you do not quench the light of Israel." 2 Sam 21:17] I love you, O LORD, my strength.
I love you, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength in whom I will trust, my shield and the horn [strength] of my salvation, my high tower.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so I shall be saved from my enemies.
The cords of death surrounded me, and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
The cords of hell surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD and cried to my God; he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even to his ears.
Then the earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the hills also moved and were shaken because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and consuming came fire out of his mouth; coals were kindled by it.
He bowed the heavens and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
And he rode upon a cherub and flew; yes, he flew upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his secret place; his canopy around him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
From the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.
The LORD also thundered from the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice amid hailstones and bolts of lightning.
Yes, he sent out his arrows and scattered the enemy; he shot out lightnings and routed them.
Then the beds of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the world were uncovered at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He reached down from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my stay and my support.
He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me because he delighted in me.
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has recompensed me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his laws were before me, and I did not put his statutes away from me.
I was upright before him and I kept myself from iniquity.
Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
With the merciful you will show yourself merciful, with an upright man you will show yourself upright,
With the pure you will show yourself pure and with the perverse you will show yourself contrary.
For you will save an afflicted and humble people but will bring down haughty looks.
You will cause my lamp to be lit; the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. [From the Word of the Lord within: "Walking in the light is to be guided through life by God; walking in darkness is making your own decisions as to what to do and say; all sin is darkness."]
For by you I can run through a troop; and by my God I can leap over a wall.
As for God, his way is blameless. The Lord's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him.
For who is God except the LORD? And who is the rock except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like hinds' [deer's] feet; and sets me upon my high places.
He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You have also given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand has held me up; your gentleness has made me great.
You have enlarged my path under me, so that my feet did not slip.
I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them; neither did I turn again until they were consumed.
I have wounded them so that they were not able to rise; they have fallen under my feet.
For you have girded me with strength for the battle; you have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
You have also made my enemies turn their backs in flight, so that I might destroy those who hate me.
They cried, but there was none to save them; even to the LORD, but he did not answer them.
Then I beat them as small as the dust before the wind; I cast them out as the dirt in the streets.
You have delivered me from the strivings of the people; you have made me the head of the heathen; a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me; the strangers shall submit themselves to me.
The strangers shall lose heart and come trembling out of their hiding places.
The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock; let the God of my salvation be exalted.
It is God who avenges me and subdues the peoples under me.
He deliverers me from my enemies; yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me; you have delivered me from the violent man.
Therefore will I give thanks to you, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises to your name.
He gives great deliverance to his king; and shows mercy to his anointed, to David and to his seed forevermore.
