Psalms 42

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 As the deer pants after the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, "Where is your God?"

4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul within me: how I went with the multitude and led them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude that kept a holy day.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted in me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, my Help and my God.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan and from Mount Hermon, from the hill Mizar.

7 Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have gone over me.

8 Yet the LORD will command his loving kindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I will say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?"

10 As with a sword in my bones, my enemies reproach me; while they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"1

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope you in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the help of my countenance and my God.

1 my enemies reproach me; while they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These could not be enemies of the earth; David would not stand to hear from such blasphemers. These are spiritual beings, in the higher dimension of the Kingdom of Hell, who share the same space with our physical dimension, and who are used by the Lord to chasten and scourge any son whom he accepts, Heb 12:6.
