Wisdom 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 It is better to have no children and to have virtue, for the memorial of virtue is immortal, being known with both God and with men.

2 When virtue is present, men imitate it; and they desire it, when it has withdrawn itself; and it triumphs crowned forever, winning the reward of undefiled conflicts.

3 But the multiplied brood of the wicked shall not thrive, and bastard slips shall not take deep root, nor any firm foundation.

4 For though they flourish in branches for a time, yet not standing firm, they shall be shaken with the wind; and through the force of winds they shall be rooted out.

5 The imperfect branches shall be broken off, their fruit unprofitable, not ripe to eat; yes, fit for nothing.

6 For the children that are born of unlawful beds, are witnesses of wickedness against their parents in their trial [at final judgment, to which all men must submit].

7 Although the righteous man is prevented with death, yet shall he be in rest.

8 For honorable old age is not that of long time, nor counted by the number of years,

9 But the wisdom of a person is [testifies as to] gray hairs, and a spotless life is old age. [If you have not obtained wisdom in life, you have not aged; but you have remained as a child without understanding. You must pass through the earth wise, otherwise you must learn the hard way with less reward in the next life. See Is There Hope for All for more.]

10 One pleased God and was beloved, and living among sinners was translated. [And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Gen 5:24. And Paul and others of the early church were translated, but continued living on the earth while in the Kingdom.]

11 Yes, speedily was he taken away, lest wickedness should alter his understanding, or deceit beguile his soul.

12 For the bewitching of vanity obscures good things and the wandering of lust overturns the innocent mind.

13 Being made perfect in a short time, they are fulfilled for a long time.

14 For their souls pleased God, and therefore God hastened to bring them out of the midst of iniquities; but the people see this and do not understand, nor do they lay up such things in their hearts.

15 That the grace of God, and God’s mercy is with the saints, and that God has respect to the chosen.

16 Thus the righteous who is dead shall condemn the ungodly who are living; and youth that is quickly perfected [shall condemn] the many years and old age of the unrighteous.

17 For they [the unrighteous] shall see the end of the wise, and shall not understand what God in his counsel hath decreed of them [the wise], and why the Lord has placed them [the wise] in safety.

18 They shall see them, and shall despise them, but the Lord shall laugh them to scorn.

19  And they shall fall after this without honor, and be a reproach among the dead forever, for the Lord shall burst them puffed up and speechless, and shall shake them from the foundations, and they shall be utterly laid waste; they shall be in sorrow, and their memory shall perish.

20  They shall come with fear at the thought of their sins, and their iniquities shall stand against them to convict them.1

1 They shall come with fear at the thought of their sins, and their iniquities shall stand against them to convict them. For everyone who does evil deeds [sins] hates the light [so hates Christ, who is the light] and does not come to the light for fear his deeds will be exposed and reproved. John 3:20. The light of the Word in each man, will testify against the sins of a man; acting as a monitor, the light records every vain word, every sinful deed: But I say to you, for every idle word that men speak, they will give an account of the same in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. Mat 12:36-37.
