1 John 2:16
16 For everything by the world — the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eye, and the boastful pride of life (or possessions) — is not by the Father, but exists by the world. [For what your flesh and eye desires, and your pride of your life, comes not from the Creator, but comes from the system of the world, ruled by the god of this world, Satan. Whatever you covet is idolatry. Desires (lusts) of the flesh and of the eye are covetousness, which is not even to be named once among true Christians, Eph 5:3,5; and pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Pro 6:18. From the Word of the Lord within: "Pride can be stating how much you paid for something. So repent out of this foolishness."]
16 This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another. So that you cannot do the things you wish. [The flesh with its lusts and pride wars against your soul, the Spirit of God, and the inner law of God in you heart. This war must be won by you to victory, the overcoming of sin, the world, and the devil — for you to attain freedom from sin and salvation. This can only occur if you do not do the things you wish; you must crucify your lusts and fleshly desires to then be guided in thoughts, words, and deeds by God. You must be led by the Spirit, following Him, which is doing His will, not yours; the man of flesh, your carnal mind, and your will must die on the inward cross of self-denial.]
5 For those who live according to the flesh, aim in satisfying things of the flesh; but those who live after the Spirit, aim to satisfy the things of the Spirit. [Flesh: fulfilling the lusts of the body and flesh, the thoughts of the carnal mind, and the evil imagination vs. Spirit: to think as the Spirit supplies thoughts, to speak only what is heard from the Spirit, and to do only what the Spirit shows you and energizes you to do.]
8 So then those who are in the flesh [living in their sinful nature] cannot please God. [Mark! If you are living for your lusts and pleasures, if you are walking by your carnal mind, if you are still without the continual guidance of God's Spirit, you are in the flesh. If you have not mortified the fleshly, sinful nature on the inward cross of self-denial, you are none of Christ's: Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh [the sinful nature] with its passions and desires [lusts and affections]. Gal 5:24.]
9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ [to rule a man as his king, doing His will], he is none of his. [Paul has clearly said in the preceding verses that unless your sinful nature has been destroyed, including your carnal mind; that unless you are no longer walking according to your lusts, passions, and pleasures; that unless you are walking under control of the Spirit in thought, word and deed; then you are not a part of Christ — you are not in Christ — you do not belong to Christ — yet. You first must mortify your fleshly, sinful nature on the inward cross of self-denial... Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh [the sinful nature] with its passions and desires (lusts and affections). Gal 5:19-24. Click to see more on being "in Christ."]
22 Strip yourselves of your former nature that controlled your conduct, which corrupts itself through lusts and desires that spring from delusion;
3 Among whom we also all had our conduct in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the thoughts of our mind; and were by nature the children of wrath and the object of His indignation, just as the rest of mankind.1 [Notice! All mankind walks in sinful lusts, according to the desires of their flesh and thoughts of their mind, which is under Satan's direction. However, Paul is speaking to crucified believers, who are no longer controlled by the lusts of their flesh; who no longer think their own thoughts, whose sinful nature has been destroyed, including its carnal mind, replaced by the mind of Christ.]
1 Peter 2:11,4:2
11 Dearly beloved, I beg you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts that war against the soul;4 ["Flee youthful lusts, but aim at and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace..." 2 Tim 2:22. "Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside his body, but he who commits sexual immorality, sins against his own body." 1 Cor 6:18. From the Word of the Lord within: "The greatest desires are fleshly. Mankind's failure — sexual immorality. A man must learn control of his body. Restraint of sin is not enough; salvation is being freed from even the desire of your sins. We must be shown the extent of our sexual desires. Only a heart that is purged of sin is acceptable to God. Do not be confused; do not be misled; you must break a suspected action. There is a war you must win: sin must be overcome; the fleshly lusts war against your soul." George Fox wrote: "The spirit of God is grieved, vexed, and quenched with what brings into the fleshly bondage; and what wars against the spirit of God must be mortified by it for the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to each other. The flesh would have its liberty, and the spirit would have its liberty; but the spirit is to have its liberty, and not the flesh."]
2 So that you should not live the rest of your time in the flesh in the lusts of men, but [live] to the will of God.1
Romans 13:14
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts of it.
