1 John 1:8-10

Display Chapter and Footnotes

8 If we say that we have no sin [when he reproves us], we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [If we say we have no sin, thinking we are already righteous, we have no motivation to go to Him, seeking His help to become clean, pure, and acceptable to God. All men are sinners, defiled by evil in their hearts, until we are purified and freed from all sin by the power of God.]

9 If we do not deny our sins [when he reproves us], he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [When we go to Christ to sit and wait on Him, as He (the Light) shows us our sins and we acknowledge them, He will forgive and purify us of that sin. We believed Christ, and our obedience shows that we love the truth who is Christ.]

10 If we say that we have not sinned [when he reproves us], we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. [When we wait on God, as He searches our heart to put our sins before us, if we deny what He shows us, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. We didn't believe Christ, showing that we hate Christ.]
