Samuel 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, and they slew about four thousand men of the army of Israel in the field.

When the army had returned into their camp, the elders of Israel said, "The LORD has defeated us today by the hand of the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, so that when it comes among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies."

So the people sent to Shiloh to bring from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwells between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What is the meaning of this great shouting noise that we hear in the camp of the Hebrews?" And they realized that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For no such thing has happened before this.

Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? These are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Be strong and conduct yourselves like men, O you Philistines, that you are not servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you; conduct yourselves like men, and fight."

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was struck, and every man fled into his tent; and there was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen fell of Israel there that day.

The ark of God was captured by the Philistines; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

The same day a man of [the tribe of ] Benjamin fled from the army and ran to Shiloh with his clothes torn and with earth upon his head.

And when he came, Eli was sitting upon a seat by the wayside watching for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, "What is the cause of the noise of this tumult?" And the man came in hastily and told Eli.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were so dim that he could not see.

And the man said to Eli, "I am the one who came out of the army, and today I fled today out of the army. And Eli said, "What has happened my son?"

And the messenger answered and said, "Israel has fled from the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people; your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."

And it occurred that when the messenger made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, broken his neck, and died for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and went into labor; for her pains came upon her.

As she was dying from the childbirth, the women who stood by her said to her, "Fear not for you have given birth to a son." But she did not answer, nor did she notice what they had said.

She named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory is departed from Israel because the ark of God has been captured," and because of [the deaths of] her father in law and her husband.

And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel for the ark of God has been captured."
