Kings 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 So king Solomon was king over all Israel.

 And these were his officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was the high priest;

 Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, were scribes; Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the recorder;

  Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the army; Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

  Azariah, the son of Nathan, was over the officers; Zabud, the son of Nathan, was a priest and the king's friend and private advisor;

  Ahishar was was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram, the son of Abda, was in charge of the forced labor.

 Now Solomon also had twelve district governors over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each man supplied provisions for one month each year.

 These are their names: Ben-Hur [the son of Hur], in the hill country of Ephraim;

 Ben-Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan;

 Ben-Hesed, in Aruboth; to him belonged Sochoh and all the land of Hepher;

 Ben-Abinadab, in all the region of Dor; he had Taphath the daughter of Solomon as a wife;

 Baana the son of Ahilud; to him belonged Taanach, Megiddo, and all Bethshean, which is beside Zartanah below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abelmeholah, even to the place that is beyond Jokneam;

 Ben-Geber, in Ramothgilead; to him belonged the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead, also the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars;

 Ahinadab the son of Iddo had Mahanaim;

 Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he had taken Basmath the daughter of Solomon as a wife;

 Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth;

 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar;

 Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin;

 Geber the son of Uri was in the country of Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan. Only one governor was over the land at one time.

 The people of Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the seashore; they ate and drank and rejoiced.

 Now Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

 Solomon's provisions for one day were thirty measures of fine flour, sixty measures of meal,

 Ten fat oxen, twenty oxen out of the pastures, and a hundred sheep, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fatted fowl.

 For he had dominion over all the region west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings on the west side the River, and he had peace on all sides of him.

  All the days of Solomon's life Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba.

 Solomon also had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

 And the district governors, each in his month, provided food for King Solomon and for all who came to King Solomon's table; they made sure that nothing was lacking.

 They also brought barley and straw for the horses and camels to the proper place, every man according to his assignment.

 Now God gave Solomon exceeding wisdom and great understanding, and a breadth of mind like the sand that is on the seashore.

 Thus Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the people of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt.

 For he was wiser than all other men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. His fame was in all nations round about.

 He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were a thousand and five.

 He spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall; he also spoke of beasts, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish.

 Men came from all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
