Kings 6

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Now it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the second month, Ziv, that he began to build the temple of the LORD.

The temple that king Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits [90 ft] long, twenty [30 ft] wide and thirty [45 ft] high.

The length of the vestibule in front of the temple was twenty cubits [30 ft] long across to the width of the temple, and projected ten cubits [15 ft] from the front of the temple.

And for the temple he made narrow latticed windows.

Against the wall of the temple he built chambers all around both the Holy Place and of the Holy of Holies; thus he made side chambers all around.

The first story chamber was five cubits [7.5 ft] wide, the middle was six cubits [9 ft] wide, and the third was seven cubits [10.5 ft] wide; around the outside of the wall of the temple he made narrow ledges so that the beams would not be inserted into the walls of the temple.

When the temple was being built, it was built of stone made ready at the quarry, so that no hammer or axe or any tool of iron was heard in the temple while it was being built.

The doorway for the middle chamber was on the right side of the temple; one went up winding stairs into the middle chamber and from the middle into the third.

So he built the temple and finished it, and roofed the temple with beams and boards of cedar.

Then he built side chambers against the entire temple that were five cubits high; they were attached to the temple with timbers of cedar.

 The Lord said to Solomon:

"Concerning this temple that you are in building, if you will walk in my statutes, execute my ordinances, and keep all my commands and obey them, then I will fulfill my word to you, which I spoke to David your father.

And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake my people Israel."

So Solomon built the temple and finished it.

He built the inside walls of the temple with boards of cedar, from the floor of the temple to the ceiling. He covered the inside with wood, and the floor of the temple with planks of cypress.

Then he partitioned off twenty cubits [30 ft] at the rear of the temple from the floor to the ceiling with boards of cedar, to build the inner sanctuary, the Holy of Holies.

And the rest of the temple in front of this was forty cubits [60 ft] long.

The cedar of the inside of the temple was carved with buds and open flowers. All was cedar; there was no stone to be seen.

Then he prepared the Holy of Holies within the temple in which to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD.

The Holy of Holies was twenty cubits [30 ft] in length, in width, and in height. He overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid the altar that was of cedar with gold.

So Solomon overlaid the inside of temple with pure gold, and he made a partition by drawing chains of gold in front of the Holy of Holies and overlaid it with gold.

The whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple. He also overlaid the whole altar that was outside the Holy of Holies.

Within the Holy of Holies he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high.

Five cubits was the length of one wing of the cherub and five cubits the other wing; from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other was ten cubits.

The wings of the other cherub were also ten cubits [15 ft]. Both the cherubim were of the same measure.

The height of one cherub was ten cubits [15 ft], and so was the other.

Then he set the cherubim within the inner temple. The wings of the cherubim stretched out, so that the wing of one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall, and their wings touched one another in the middle of the room.

And he overlaid the cherubim with gold.

On the walls of the temple all around, inside and out, he carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.

The floors of the temple he overlaid with gold, inside and out.

For the entrance of the Holy of Holies he made doors of olive wood; the lintel and side posts were one fifth that of the wall.

The two doors also were of olive wood; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. He overlaid them with gold, and spread gold on the cherubim and upon the palm trees.

He also made for the door of the Holy Place four sided posts of olive wood.

The two doors were of cypress wood; the two leaves of each door were folding.

And he carved on it cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and covered them with gold applied on the carved work.

He built the inner courtyard with three rows of hewn stone and a row of cedar beams.

In the fourth year the foundation of the temple of the LORD was laid, in the month Ziv.

And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, the temple was finished throughout according to all its specifications. So he was seven years in building it.
