Samuel 31

Previous Chapter

 Now the Philistines warred against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, falling down slain on Mount Gilboa.

 And the Philistines in pursuit overtook and fell upon Saul and his sons; and the Philistines slew Saul's sons: Jonathan, Abinadab, and Melchishua.

 The battle went greatly against Saul, and the archers shot him; so that he was seriously wounded by the archers.

 Then said Saul to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; otherwise these uncircumcised will come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armor bearer refused because he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell upon it.

 And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.

 So Saul died, with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men, on that same day together.

 And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they deserted the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelled in them.

 And it came to pass on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead in the battlefield, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on mount Gilboa.

 And they cut off Saul's head and stripped off his armor, and sent them round about in the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news [of Saul's defeat and death] in the house of their idols and among the people.

 They put his armor in the temple of [the idols] Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

 And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul;

 All the valiant men arose, and traveled all night to remove the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan; they brought them to Jabesh and burnt them there.

 The men took their burnt bones, buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and then fasted seven days.
