|1 Timothy 3:1-7 |
This is a true saying: If a man desires the office of a bishop, he desires a good work.
Now a bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, able to teach;
Not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for filthy lucre [money], but patient, not a brawler, not covetous.
He must rule his own house well, having his children in subjection with all gravity
(For if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?)
He must not be a recent convert, for fear that being lifted up with pride he would fall into the same judgment incurred by the devil.
Moreover he must have a good report from those who are outsiders; lest he fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.
