2 Kings 9

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 Now Elisha the prophet called one of the company of the prophets and said to him, "Gird up your loins, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramothgilead.

2 And when you have come there, look for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi; and go in and have him arise from among his companions and take him to an inner chamber.

3 Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, 'Thus says the LORD, I anoint you king over Israel.' Then open the door and flee, do not tarry."

4 So the young man, the young prophet, went to Ramothgilead.

5 And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were sitting together; and he said, "I have a message for you, commander." And Jehu said, "For which of us?" And he replied, "For you, commander."

6 Then Jehu arose, and they went into the house. And the prophet poured the oil on his head and said to him, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'I anoint you king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.

7 You shall destroy the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the LORD who have died at the hands of Jezebel.

8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab all who piss against the wall [males], both bond and free, in Israel.

9  I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah.

10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the property of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.'" Then the prophet opened the door and fled.

11 Now Jehu came out to his fellow servants and one of them said to him, "Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?" And he said to them, "You know the type of man and what sort of thing he would say."

12 And they said, "That is false! Tell us." So he said, "Thus and thus he spoke to me, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: I anoint you king over Israel.'"

13 Then they hurried and took their cloaks and placed them under him on the bare steps, and blew with trumpets, saying, "Jehu is king."

14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel were holding Ramothgilead against Hazael king of Syria,

15 But King Joram had returned to recover in Jezreel from the wounds that the Syrians had given him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, "If you are so minded, let no one go out or escape from the city [Ramothgilead] to go and tell the news in Jezreel."

16 Then Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram was laid up there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Joram.

17 Now a watchman who stood on the tower in Jezreel spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, "I see a company of men." And Joram said, "Get a horseman and send him to meet them and have him ask, 'Do you come in peace?'"

18 So the horseman went to meet Jehu and said, "Thus says the king, 'Do you come in peace?'" And Jehu said, "What have you to do with peace? Fall in behind me." Then the watchman reported, "The messenger came to them, but he does not return."

19 So Joram sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, "Thus says the king, 'Do you come in peace?" And Jehu answered, "What have you to do with peace? Fall in behind me."

20 And the watchman reported, "He came to them, but he does not return either; and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously."

21 Then Joram said, "Make my chariot ready." And his chariot was made ready. And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his own chariot. Thus they went out against Jehu and met him in the field of Naboth the Jezreelite.

22 And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, "Do you come in peace, Jehu?" And Jehu answered, "What peace can there be as long as the harlotry [idolatry] of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?

23 So Joram turned around and fled, and he called to Ahaziah, "There is treachery, Ahaziah."

24 Then Jehu drew a bow with his full strength and struck Joram between his sholders; and the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank down in his chariot.

25 Then Jehu said to Bidkar his captain, "Take Joram up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember how when you and I rode together behind Ahab his father, the LORD made this prophecy about him:

26 'As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, says the LORD, I will repay you on this plot of ground.' Now therefore take Joram and cast him on the plot of ground of Naboth, according to the word of the LORD."

27 Now when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him and said, "Strike him in his chariot also." And they did so at the Ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam." But Ahaziah fled to Megiddo and died there.

28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David.

29  Ahaziah had begun his reign over Judah in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab.

30 Now when Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it, and she painted her face, adorned her head, and looked out of a window.

31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, "Have you come in peace, Zimri, you murderer of your master?"

32 Then he looked up to the window and said, "Who is on my side? Who?" And two or three eunuchs looked down at him.

33 And he said, "Throw her down!" So they threw her down, and some of her blood was splattered on the wall and on the horses as they trampled her underfoot.

34 Now when Jehu came in, he ate and drank, and said, "Go, see now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter."

35 So they went to bury her, but they found nothing left of her except her skull, her feet, and her hands.

36 Therefore they came back again and told Jehu. And he said, "This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 'In the property of Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel.'

37 The carcass of Jezebel shall be like dung on the field in the property of Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, 'Here lies Jezebel.'"
