Amos 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

"Hear this word, you cows [women] of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, 'Bring, and let us drink.'

The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness that the days shall come upon you that they will take you away with hooks and your posterity with fishhooks.

And you will go out through the breaches, every cow straight before her, and you will be cast to Harmon, says the LORD.

Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply your transgression; bring your sacrifices every morning and your tithes every three days.

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven [hypocrisy], and proclaim and brag about your freewill offerings, for you like to do this, O you children of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

I have also given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and need of bread in all your places; yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

And I have also withheld the rain from you, when there were still three months until harvest. And I caused it to rain upon one city and caused it not to rain upon another city; one piece was rained upon, and the piece where it did not rain withered.

So two or three cities staggered to one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I have struck you with blight and mildew; when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the locust devoured them; yet you have not returned to me, says the Lord.

I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt; I have slain your young men with the sword and have taken away your horses, and I have made the stink of your camps come up to your nostrils; yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I have overthrown some of you as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a piece of burning wood plucked out of the fire; yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

Therefore I will do this to you, O Israel; and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.

For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind and shows a man what are his thoughts, who makes the morning darkness and treads upon the high places of the earth — The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name."
