|Amos 5 |
Hear this word which I take up against you in lamentation, O house of Israel:
"The virgin of Israel is fallen; she will rise no more; she is forsaken upon her land; there is no one to raise her up.
For thus says the Lord GOD: The city that went out as a thousand shall leave as a hundred, and that which went out as a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.
For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: Seek me and you shall live!
But do not seek Bethel nor enter into Gilgal, and do not pass over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nothing.
Seek the LORD and you shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
You who turn judgment into wormwood and cast righteousness to the earth,
Seek him who made the seven stars [the Pleiades] and Orion, and turns the deep darkness into the morning and makes the day dark with night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth; The LORD is his name —
Who flashes destruction against the strong so that destruction comes against the fortress.
They hate the one who rebukes in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks uprightly.
Therefore since you tread upon the poor and take taxes of wheat from him, you shall not dwell in the houses you have built of hewn stone; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine of them.
For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins. You afflict the just, you take a bribe, and turn aside the poor in the gate [where court was held] from their right.
Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time for it is an evil time.
Seek good and not evil so that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have spoken.
Hate the evil and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate. It may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts: Wailing will be in all streets and they will say in all the highways, 'Alas! Alas!' And they shall call the farmers to mourning, and those who are skilful in lamentation to wailing.
And there shall be wailing in all vineyards for I will pass through the midst of you, says the LORD.
Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! For what good is it to you? The day of the LORD is darkness and not light. [Woe to you Christians who think grace excuses your continued sinning for the Day of the Lord will be a terror to you. "For behold, the day comes that shall burn like an oven, and all the proud, yes, and all who do wickedly, will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch." Malachi 4:1]
It is as if a man had fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness and not light? Even very dark and no brightness in it?
I hate, I despise your feast days; and I will not savor your solemn assemblies.
Though you offer me your burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.
Take away from me the noise of your songs for I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
Instead let justice run down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.
Did you offer sacrifices and offerings to me in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel?
But you have borne the tabernacle of your king Sakkuth and Chiun, your idols of your star — gods which you made for yourselves.
Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, says the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts."
