Ecclesiastes 4

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun. I beheld the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and there was power on the side of their oppressors, but they had no comforter.

Therefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive.

Yes, better is he than both of them, he who has not been born, who has not yet lived, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

Again, I considered that for all the difficult labor and skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This is also vanity and futility.

The fool folds his hands together, and wastes away in slothfulness.

Better is a handful with quietness, than both hands full from labor that is futility.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun, [in a curious form].

There is a person who is alone, without a second around; yes, he has neither child nor brother. Yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither does he say,"For whom do I labor, and thereby deprive my soul of good?" This is also vanity, yes, it is a hard sentence.

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor.

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he does not have another to help him up.

Again, if two lie next to each other, they can warm each other; but how can one be warm alone?

And if one prevails against him, two shall withstand him; and a three strand cord is not quickly broken.

Better is a poor and a wise youth than an old and foolish king, who will no longer be admonished.

For even though the youth comes out of prison to reign; when the other, born a king in his kingdom, becomes poor.

I considered all the living who walk under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in his stead to reign.

There is no end of all the people with him, even of all who have been before them; but they who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and futility.
