Ezra 10

Previous Chapter

Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and casting himself down before the temple of God, there gathered to him a very great assembly of men, women, and children of Israel. Then the people too wept very bitterly.

And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign [heathen] women from the peoples of the land; yet there is still hope for Israel in spite of this thing.

Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done according to the law.

Arise, for this matter is your responsibility, but we are with you. Be of good courage, and do it."

So Ezra arose and made the leading priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do as had been proposed. So they swore an oath.

Then Ezra rose up from before the temple of God and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib. And when he came there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the unfaithfulness of the returned exiles.

Then a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles, that they should gather together at Jerusalem,

And that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, all his property would be forfeited and he himself would be banned from the congregation of the returned exiles.

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within three days. It was on the twentieth day of the ninth month, and all the people sat in the open square before the temple of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain.

And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have taken foreign [heathen] wives, increasing the trespass and guilt of Israel.

Now therefore make confession to the LORD God of your forefathers, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from your foreign wives."

Then all the congregation answered with a loud voice, "As you have said, so we must do.

But there are many people and it is the time of heavy rain; so we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this a work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have sinned in this thing.

Therefore, let our leaders represent all the congregation; and let all those who have taken foreign wives in our cities come at appointed times, along with the elders of every city and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God because of this matter is turned away from us."

Only Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahaziah, the son of Tikvah, opposed this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.

So the returned exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest, with certain of the heads of the fathers' houses were selected from their houses, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.

And by the first day of the first month they had finished investigating all the men who had taken foreign wives.

Among the sons of the priests who had taken foreign wives there were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

They all gave their hands [vowed] that they would put away their [heathen] wives; and, being guilty, they each offered a ram of the flock for their trespass offering.
