Galatians 4:21-28

Display Chapter and Footnotes

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear what the law says?

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave, the other by a free woman.

He who was of the slave woman was born after the flesh; but he of the free woman was born by the promise.

These things are an allegory. For these are the two covenants; one from the mount Sinai, which results in bondage, which is Hagar.

For this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to earthly Jerusalem, which now exists and is in bondage with her children.

But Jerusalem, which is above is free and is the mother of us all.

For it is written, "Rejoice, you barren who do not bear [children]. Break forth and cry, you who do not labor in childbirth. For the barren has many more [spiritual] children than she who has a husband."

Now we, brothers, are the children of the promise, as Isaac was.
