|Genesis 14 |
1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations,
2 That they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
3 All these were joined together in the valley of Siddim, which is the Dead Sea.
4 They had served Chedorlaomer twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzims in Ham, the Emins in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
6 And the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as Elparan, which is by the wilderness.
7 Then they returned and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezontamar.
8 Then the kings of Sodom, of Gomorrah, of Admah, of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela ( Zoar), joined battle with them in the valley of Siddim,
9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and Tidal the king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar — four kings against five.
10 Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and some fell there and those who remained fled to the mountain.
11 Then the kings took all the goods and all the food of Sodom and Gomorrah, and went their way.
12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who lived in Sodom, and his goods and departed.
13 Then someone who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living on the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner — these were allies with Abram.
14 And when Abram heard that his nephew was taken captive, he armed his 318 trained servants, born in his own house and pursued them as far as Dan.
15 He divided his men against them at night, he and his servants, and attacked and pursued them to Hobah, which is on the north of Damascus.
16 And he brought back all the goods, and he also brought back his nephew Lot and his possessions together with the women and the people.
17 And after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of the most high God.1
19 And he blessed him, and said, "Blessed be Abram by the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth,
20 And blessed be the most high God, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!" And he [Abram] gave him tithes [a tenth] of everything [that he had taken].
21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people and take the goods for yourself."
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted up my hand [sworn] to the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
23 That I will not take anything that is yours, not a thread or a shoelace, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.'
24 I will take only what my men have eaten, and the share that belongs to the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.

1 Melchizedek, king of Salem, was a priest of the most high God. For understanding of this event, presented below is Hebrews 7:1-20.
1 For this Melchizedeck, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 To whom Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is King of peace,"
3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, abiding as a priest continually.
4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
5 And truly those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have [had] a commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brothers, though their brothers have come from the loins of Abraham.
6 But this person whose descent is not counted from them received tithes from Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.
7 And without contradiction the less is blessed by the greater.
8 And here tithes are received by men who die; but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives forever.
9 And I may also say that Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham.
10 For he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedeck met him.
11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchizedeck, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
12 For when the priesthood is changed, there is a necessity to change the law also.
13 For he [Jesus] of whom these things are spoken applies to another tribe [Judah], of which there is no record of a man performing priestly functions at the temple's altar.
14 For it is evident that our Lord [Jesus] sprang out of the tribe of Judah [not Levi]; of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood.
15 And it is even more evident based on the similarity to Melchizedeck that another priest would arise,
16 Who is made, not based on the legality of a commandment relating to the family of Levi, but based on the power of an endless life.
17 For he [God] testifies, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedeck."
18 For there is truly a cancellation of the previous commandment [Levitical priesthood with its tithes] because of the weakness and ineffectiveness of it.
19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by which we draw near to God.
20 And since he was made a priest with an oath [from God himself],
21 (For those [Levite] priests were made without an oath; but this was with an oath by him who said to him, "The Lord swore and will not repent, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedeck."
22 By so greatness [of promise] Jesus became a guarantee of a better covenant.
23 And truly there were many priests [of the Levites], because they died and so could not continue.
24 But this man, because he continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
25 Therefore he is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God by him, because he lives forever making intercession for them.
26 For if was appropriate for us to have such a high priest, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.
27 Unlike those high priests, he does not need daily to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins and then for the people's, because he did this once and for all when he offered up himself.
28 For the law makes men high priests who have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was after the law, appoints the Son, who is consecrated forevermore.
