Genesis 28

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and commanded him, saying, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.

 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take a wife there from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.

 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a multitude of people;

 And may he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your descendants with you, so that you may inherit the land in which you are now a sojourner, which God gave to Abraham."

 So Isaac sent Jacob away; and he went to Padanaram to Laban son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

 Now when Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padanaram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan;"

 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padanaram.

 Esau then saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please Isaac his father;

 So he went to Ishmael and married, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth.

 Now Jacob went out of Beersheba and went toward Haran.

 And he came a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of that place and put it under his head for his pillows and lay down in that place to sleep.

 Then he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

 And behold, the LORD stood above him, and said, "I am the LORD, God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac; I will give the land on which you are lying to you and to your descendants.

 And your seed [descendants] shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

 And, behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back again into this land; for I will not leave you until I have done all that I have spoken to you."

 Then Jacob awoke out of his sleep, and he said, "Surely the LORD is in this place and I did not know it."

 And he was afraid and said, "How dreadful and awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!"

 So Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had used for his pillows, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

 And he called that place Bethel, though the name of that city was called Luz before.

 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,

 So that I may come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God;

 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar shall be God's house, and of all that you give me I will surely give a tenth to you."
