Hosea 2

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

"Say you to your brothers, 'Ammi [My people],' and to your sisters, 'Ruhamah [she has obtained mercy].'

Plead with your mother [Israel]; plead, for she is not my wife and I am not her husband; let her put away her whoredoms out of her sight and her adulteries from between her breasts,

Lest I strip her naked and make her as bare as in the day that she was born, and make her like a wilderness and make her like a dry land and slay her with thirst.

And I will not have mercy upon her children, for they are the children of harlotry; she who conceived them has done shamefully, for she said, 'I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.'

Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns; and wall her in so that she cannot find her paths.

And she will follow after her lovers but she will not overtake them; and she will seek them, but will not find them. Then she will say, 'I will go and return to my first husband, for then it was better with me than it is now.'

For she did not know that it was I who gave her corn and wine and oil, who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

"Therefore I will return and take away my corn in its harvest time and my wine in its season, and I will take back my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness.

So now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her out of my hand.

I will also cause her to cease all her merriment, her feast days, her new moons, her sabbaths — all her appointed feasts.

And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, 'These are my rewards [wages] that my lovers have given me;' and I will make them a thicket, and the wild beasts shall eat them.

And I will punish her for the days of the Baals, when she burned incense to them and decked herself with her earrings and her jewels and went after her lovers and forgot me," says the LORD.

"Therefore, behold, I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness, and I will speak tenderly to her.

And there I will give her her vineyards and make the valley of Achor a door of hope. And she shall sing there as in the days of her youth and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

And it shall be in that day, says the LORD, "that you will call me 'Ishi [my husband],' and will no longer call me 'Baali [my master].'

For I will take away the names of the Baals out of her mouth, and they will no longer be remembered by their name.

And in that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of heaven and with the creeping things of the ground. And I will break the bow and the sword and battle out of the earth, and I will make them lie down safely.

And I will betroth you to me forever; yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, and in loving kindness, and in mercy.

I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you shall know the LORD.

"And in that day I will respond," says the LORD, "I will respond to the heavens, and they shall respond to the earth,

And the earth shall respond to the grain and the wine and the oil, and they shall respond to Jezreel [God plants].

I will plant her for me in the earth, and I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them who were not my people, 'You are my people;' and they shall say, 'You are my God.'"
