Isaiah 3

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

"For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stock and the store, the whole supply of bread, and the whole supply of water.

The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, the prophet, the prudent, and the ancient,

The captain of fifty, the honorable man, the counselor, the skillful artist, and the eloquent orator.

And I will make children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

And the people shall be oppressed, everyone by another, and everyone by his neighbor. The child shall behave himself proudly against the old, and the low born against the honorable.

When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, 'You have clothing, be our ruler, and let this ruin be under your control.'

In that day shall he swear, saying, 'I will not cure this; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing; so do not make me a ruler of the people.'

For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen because their tongue and their deeds are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

The look on their faces bears witnesses against them, and they display their sin as Sodom; they don't hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have recompensed evil upon themselves.

Say you to the righteous, that it will be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

Woe to the wicked! It shall be bad with him; for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

The LORD stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people.

The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and their princes. For you have consumed the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

What do you mean by beating my people into pieces, and grinding the faces of the poor?" says the Lord GOD of hosts.

 Moreover the LORD said: "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with stretched, haughty necks and alluring eyes, walking daintily along, making a tinkling noise with their feet;

Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab on the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will uncover their private parts.

In that day the Lord will take away the elegance of their tinkling jewelry about their feet, their headbands, their crescent collars,

The chains, the bracelets, the veils,

The headdresses, the jewelry of the legs, the scarves, the perfume bottles, the earrings,

 The rings, nose jewels,

The changeable suits of apparel, the capes, the cloaks, the crisping pins,

The mirrors, the fine linen, the hoods, and the burkas.

And it shall come to pass, that instead of a sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well set hair, baldness; and instead of a robe, a dress of sackcloth; and brandings, instead of beauty.

Your men shall fall by the sword, and also your mighty in the war.

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and being desolate, she shall sit on the ground."
