|John 19:19-20 |
19 Now Pilate had written a sign and put it on the cross. And the sign read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This sign was then read by many of the Jews because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.3
3 Pilate had written a sign and put it on the cross. And the sign read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.... it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. In George Fox's time, the only colleges were schools of religion; and those who had learned Hebrew, Greek, and Latin were deemed to be "divines." They were thought to be superior in godliness to anyone else because they could read the "original languages." George Fox ridiculed this belief, stating that according to their logic, Pilate was the first "divine" because he had written the sign placed atop Jesus in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. The Holy Spirit can reveal understandings in any language; but Bible Colleges teach from Hebrew, Greek, and Latin Biblical texts, desperately trying to discover the true meaning of the scriptures. If the Holy Spirit was helping in Bible study, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin would not be needed, proving Jesus and the Holy Spirit do not teach you while reading the Bible.
