|John 19:31-35 |
Now because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was a high one), the Jews requested Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten their death], and then their bodies taken away.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. [Jesus died sooner than the others because he had been brutally beaten by the Jewish palace guards and then by the entire Roman garrison, so much that his face and form were beyond human recognition.]
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately came blood and water out.
And he [John] who witnessed this, provides this account, and his account is true; and he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you might believe.
