|Jonah 3 |
And the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you."
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city of three days' journey.
And Jonah began to enter into the city after a day's journey, and he cried, "In Forty days Nineveh shall be overthrown."
So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne and he laid his robe aside, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And he made a proclamation and published it through Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink water.
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands.
Who can tell, God may turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger so that we do not perish?"
And God saw their deeds, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented concerning the destruction that he had said that he would do to them; and he did not do it.
