Malachi 1

Next Chapter

This is the oracle of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi:

"I have loved you, says the LORD. Yet you say, 'In what way have you loved us?' Was not Esau, Jacob's brother? Says the LORD; yet I loved Jacob,

And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the jackals of the wilderness.

Even though Edom [Esau] says, 'We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places,' thus says the LORD of hosts: They will build, but I will throw down; and men shall call them the Wicked Territory, and the people against whom the LORD has indignation forever.

And your eyes shall see and you shall say, 'The LORD will be magnified beyond the border of Israel.'

A son honors his father and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my reverent fear? Says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. And you ask, 'How have we despised your name?'

By offering polluted bread upon my altar. And you ask, 'How have we defiled you?' In that you say, 'The table of the LORD is contemptible.'

If you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it not evil? And if you offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? Offer these to your governor. Will he be pleased with you or accept you favorably? Says the LORD of hosts.

And now, I beg you priests, entreat God that he will be gracious to us. With this being offered by your hand will he regard you favorably? says the LORD of hosts.

Who is there among you who would shut the doors so that you could pretend to kindle a fire on my altar. I have no pleasure in you, says the LORD of hosts, nor will I accept an offering from your hand.

For from the rising of the sun till its going down my name shall be great among the Gentiles, and in every place incense and a pure offering shall be offered to my name; for my name shall be great among the heathen, says the LORD of hosts.

But you have defiled it, in that you say, 'The table of the LORD is defiled, and the fruit of it, its food, is contemptible.'

You also say, 'Behold, what a weariness is it!' and you have sniffed at it, says the LORD of hosts. And you brought that which was torn and lame and sick; this you brought as an offering! Should I accept this from your hand? Says the LORD.

But cursed is the deceiver who has a male in his flock and vows it, but sacrifices a blemished thing to the LORD! For I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name is terrible among the heathen."
