|Matthew 4:8-19 |
8 Again, the devil took him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And said to him, "I will give you all these things, if you will fall down and worship me."
10 Then Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan; for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'"
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been cast into prison, he departed into Galilee.
13 And leaving Nazareth, he went and dwelt in Capernaum, which is on the sea coast, in the region of Zabulun and Naphtali.
14 Thus it was fulfilled as had been spoken by Isaiah the prophet, who had said:
16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great Light, and to those who sat in the land and shadow of death, Light has dawned."1 [Jesus, the light who enlightens every man who comes into the world, is given to every man so that he might believe the truth; so a man might believe the truth of what the light shows and tells him about his evil behavior. Jesus is the light of the world, who if man follows, (believes what he is told), will have the light of life, and will be reconciled and restored to God, who is light, to become children of the light. All men sit in darkness and walk in darkness until their hearts have been purged from the evil that defiles them.]
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." [Jesus said further: "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, that repentance and release from bondage of sins (remission) should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Luke 24:46-47.]
18 Now Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
1 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great Light, and to those who sat in the land and shadow of death, Light has dawned. Every man is living in spiritual darkness in his fallen nature inherited from Adam's fall in the Garden of Eden. We are all stumbling through life in darkness on our own brain's selfish, defective decisions; but when the light has dawned in you, you can walk by the light of God, always given perfect words of virtue to speak and shown perfect deeds of virtue to be performed. Jesus promises to bring us out of darkness to live in his marvelous light while still alive on the earth and then forever. Jesus is the Light, the light who enlightens every man who comes into the world, given to every man so that he might believe, John 1:7,9; so that every man might believe the truth of what the light shows him about his evil behavior. Jesus is the light of the world, who if man follows, (believes what he is told), will have the light of life, and will be reconciled and restored to God, who is light, to become children of the light.
From the Word of the Lord within:
How is this done?—by believing what Christ the light shows and says to you. The light of Christ is given to every man so that he might believe — believe the truth. At some point in every man's life, the light anonymously shows us the truth of our evil ways, pleading with us to turn from evil and do what is right. If we believe the light, evidenced by our heeding it, then the light and spirit of Christ increases in us, and eventually we receive by revelation from the Father a hunger for righteousness and more of God. To obtain more of God, we must expose ourselves to listen and hear more of God's commands to us. We do that by obeying his many suggestions of come to me, which is to sit in humble silence, waiting on God, as we listen, watch, hear, and obey. To believe the light is to believe Jesus.
Jesus gave us our priorities:
As our life's highest priority, with daily patience and persistence we go to Him to sit in humble silence, waiting on God, listening to hear his teachings and commands. Each word we hear, believe, and obey, is engrafted into our heart; each word we hear, believe and obey, imparts more of the life of Christ into our hearts; each word we hear adds to the purification of our hearts. With our obedient endurance to the end, we see Christ bring our salvation and eternal life.
In addition to Christ being named the word, Christ is also named the light, which enlightens every man and is given to every man so that he might believe; the light, is the light of the word, the light of Christ:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was god.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and there was nothing made without him.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness; and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Which is the true Light that enlightens every man who comes into the world.
that all might believe in it. John 1:1-5,7,9
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life." John 8:12
To follow Jesus is to go to Him, sit at His feet, wait in humble silence, as you listen for Him to speak; and then obey what you hear Him command you.
While you have light, believe in the light, that you may become the children of light. John 12:36
And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world [every man], but men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For everyone who does evil hates the light [so hates Christ, who is the light], and does not come to the light for fear his deeds will be exposed and reproved.
But he who practices truth comes to the light, so that his deeds may be shown to have been produced [formed and powered] through God. John 3:19-21
God is light, 1 John 1:5.
From the Word of the Lord within:
Faith in the voice is evidenced by your obedience to what you hear the Lord speak to you as you wait on Him and listen in humble silence; to follow is to obey what you hear Christ speak to you — that is operational faith that is alive, not dead.
Now as he [Saul, later named Paul] neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven shined around him.
And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"
And he said, "Who are you, Lord? " And the Lord said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting." Acts 9:3-5
