Matthew 27:27-30

Display Chapter and Footnotes

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered around him the entire cohort of [Roman] soldiers. [A Roman army cohort was 500-600 men.]

28 And they stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him.

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a staff in his right hand. And they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

30 Then they spit on him, and took the staff and hit him repeatedly on the head. [The entire garrison of Roman soldiers beat Jesus so much that He was so disfigured that He no longer looked like a man, Isa 52:14. The New International reads: "his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being — and his form marred beyond human likeness." From the Word of the Lord within: "It would have helped if one soldier was kind to me."]

16 Then the soldiers led him away into the hall, called the Praetorium; and they called together the whole garrison of soldiers.

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns and put it about his head,

18 And began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

19 Then they struck him again and again on the head with a staff, and spit on him, and bowing their knees they pretended to worship him.

Isaiah 52:14

Display Chapter and Footnotes

14 (just as many were horrified by the sight of you); he was so disfigured [that] he no longer looked like a man; [The New International reads: "his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being — and his form marred beyond human likeness." As soon as Jesus was flogged, (we don't know how many lashes he took), and sentenced to be crucified by Pilate, he was handed over to the Roman guard, who then called together the entire Roman cohort or garrison to beat Jesus. They stripped him of his clothing, put on him a purple robe, a crown of thorns, and then they mocked him, spit on him, and beat him so much that his face and body did not look like a man any longer. From the Word of the Lord within: "It would have helped if one soldier was kind to me."]
