18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ occurred in this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
19 Then Joseph her [promised] husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was considering to put her away privately.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS, for he shall save his people from their sins."2 [Jesus saves people from their sins, not in their sins. He doesn't save us from the consequence of our sins, he saves us from our slavery to sin — he is the deliverer — he rescues men from their sins. For this purpose the Son of God is revealed [in us], that he might destroy [in us] the works [sin] of the devil. 1 John 3:8-10.]
22 Now all this took place that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet [Isaiah] who said,
24 Then Joseph awoke and did as the angel of the Lord had told him, and took Mary as his wife;
25 But he had no union with her until she had given birth to her firstborn son; and he called his name JESUS.
|Isaiah 7:14 |
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.1
